Salford Council Job Losses

Recommended Posts

http://www.bbc.co.uk...hester-12189751

Salford City Council is considering shedding 800 jobs to make savings of £45m over the next 12 months.

How do 800 jobs cost 45M?

The cost of employing someone by the time employer NI, pension, training, office costs (floor space, heating, computer (software & support), phone lines...) the cost of an employee can be almost double the gross salary.

A lean private sector company of a similar size I restructured (in a former occupation) had a total employee cost range of 1.3-1.8x gross salary (this was one thing they were good at, too many over paid managers was the problem in the companies case...)

Salaries are not the only cost.

For example I know a council that is losing 5 jobs to save £1m, they are not on £200k each.

However the department is responsible for administering grants to local groups and charities and their annual £800k budget is being cut to £0 so they are getting rid of all the staff.
