Congresswoman Nearly Dies After Being Shot In The Head At Point Blank Range In Gun Rampage Which Left '12 Others' Hurt

A Congresswoman has died after being shot in the head during a campaigning event in the U.S.

Gabrielle Giffords was outside Safeway grocery store in Tucson, Arizona, when a gunman struck.

A Pima County sheriff's spokesman says at least 12 people were shot at the event. One person is in custody.

Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, was first elected to the House in 2006 and represents the state's 8th Congressional District. She was taken to the University Medical Center Hospital but medics were unable to save her.

According to MSNBC, the gunman ran into a 'crowded area' and began 'firing indiscriminately'.

Giffords was apparently talking to a couple when the suspect ran up and shot her at point blank range. According to other witnesses, he was tackled by a bystander and taken into custody.

No information yet about who carried out the attack but will the killer be someone who's been caught up in the economic collapse or just the usual loner nut job who always seem to carry out these attacks.

Or has the revolt begun?

The important thing for Americans to do is to oppose the anti-gun lobby, because having guns makes America safer.

It's teenagers having sex they need to focus their attention on.

The shooting occurred at a Safeway supermarket in northwest Tucson as Ms. Giffords hosted an event, called “Congress on Your Corner, to allow members of the 8th Congressional District to meet her individually. She has held several events since first taking office in January 2007. At one such event in 2009, a protester was removed by police when his pistol fell on the supermarket floor.

Last March, her Tucson office was vandalized a few hours after the House vote overhauling the nation’s health care system, the authorities said. Earlier events in Tucson, Oro Valley, Green Valley, Sierra Vista, and Douglas had attracted between 75 and 150 people, according to a statement announcing the event. This was her first event since her re-election to a third term in November.

A political killing? Sounds like there have been a few close shaves in the past.

Apparently Sarah Palin had named her as a 'target' for some sort of campaign or other. Also, reports that Palin may have published an image with crosshairs on said Congresswoman's head - political dynamite, if true.

There are reports the Congresswoman is still alive. Don't know if they're accurate though.

Her condition was unknown. She was taken to University Medical Center in Tucson, the trauma center for the area, about 10 miles away. NPR and CNN reported that she had been killed, but Darci Slater, a hospital spokeswoman, said that Ms. Giffords was in surgery.

Yep it seems a confused about her status.

There will be no revolt in the States. I've never know a more placid population, despite all the guns. Contrary to the image portrayed in Hollywood movies. As has been explained to me "protest is not in vocabulary, unlike Europe." That and they haven't a clue what to do (a bit like us).

Odd that in a country supposedly safe because everyone has guns, that this odd ball was able to shoot 12 people.

I thought that he would have been riddled 100 times over before he could shoot the second person.

I wonder what Denniger will say on the matter, from reading him in the past he's pro gun because if everyone has a gun you can defend yourself and therefore won't get shot because you can shoot the perp. I've never been convinced by that argument.

even if it is to do with the economy, it won't be. the govt and press will make sure fo that and turn the guy into a nutter.

or it's staged and ready for a repeal of constitution right to bear arms, like the uk.

or it just happened.

on the fence atm.

To be fair, he does seem to have been stopped by a bystander, and the presumed target is still alive.

Shame about the little girl.

A new low for this forum?

I would doubt it. A country that lives by the gun dies by the gun. If it troubles you then get off your ass ,go to the US , and change the gun laws. Don't sit at your PC wringing your hands. Its a waste of effort.

This is a bit of a whoopsie for Palin.

Putting the woman in crosshairs on your website isn't a nice thing to do, even without her getting shot.

Part of the tactics of the US right has been to incite hatred for 'socialists', 'liberals', 'eggheads' and, indeed, anyone who says rational things in public. The most surprising thing is how few shootings there are..

Why has Safeways not yet been renamed Morrisons ? very suspicious all round if you ask me

They sold the UK Safeways to Argyll Foods, the owner of Presto supermarkets. Argyll Foods subsequently changed its own name to Safeways, and a bit later was taken over by Morrisons.
