So it cost £5.5bn to build and saves 20 minutes, economically viable? http://amazingdata.com/the-worlds-longest-cross-sea-bridge/ Edited December 31, 2010 by interestrateripoff
interestrateripoff
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_bridges_in_the_world Although listed here the Chinese also have a nice 164km rail bridge!
gilf
Not as bad as the M6 Toll. Not sure what it cost, but it's a mile or two longer than the M6 between J4 and J11 and involves a mandatory stop for the tollbooth, thus taking more time than the route it replaced around 90% of the time. I take it you never travel on the M6 past Birmingham because that is the biggest load of tosh I have ever heard on here.

gilf
Yeah, all the time. OK, there may be 4 hours a day where time savings can be pretty much guaranteed, so take that 90% down to 80%. Even so, it rarely seems worth the £5 to save a few minutes on a 27 mile route, and the point remains that this road does not offer any distance saving. Fair enough*, I assume you travel by car when you go on holiday to say Spain for example. No point going by plane of course as there is no distance saving * I have been on the M6 past Birmingham at many different times of day and it is always hideous, I'm more than happy to throw £5 out of the window and then travel at Warp speed whenever I travel up North to see relatives. Wouldn't do it on a daily basis of course but well worth the money if you ask me. Edited December 31, 2010 by gilf

longtomsilver
Take the guess work out of the M6 and use Traffic England on the interweb to view the traffic cameras. I avoid the M6 on anything but the motorcycle.
Executive Sadman
Beautiful structure. And when hydrogen/electric/some other power source cars come along, we'll still have a crappy road network because of all the nimbys and soap dodgers kept saying it isnt green/sustainable/concreting over little englands green and pleasant land or some other rubbish.
