Meadowhall Enjoys Record Breaking Sales Bonanza

THOUSANDS of bargain hunters flocked to Meadowhall as the sales got underway - smashing the record for the largest number of shoppers to visit in one day.

A total of 147,000 people visited the Sheffield shopping mall on Monday - the highest number of visitors in the centre's 20-year history.

Centre director Darren Pearce said a combination of people having been given gift vouchers as Christmas presents, restricted Boxing Day opening hours for the shops and the start of the big name stores' sales had contributed to the record breaking footfall.

He said: "Monday has been the biggest day in our history. For me it was the perfect storm.

"The record numbers of people being given giftcards and cash for Christmas, combined with the shorter Boxing Day opening hours and the start of some of the big sales such as the Next sale, all helped increase visitor numbers."

Although what's not mentioned in the article is how the City centre is doing, did it have a record day with people visiting?

Plus does footfall equal actual sales. Obviously people coming through the doors is good but then if they are only buying cheap items, then maybe that won't be so good.

I wonder how many old grannies were in Meadowhall trying to simply keep warm :unsure:

Maybe there is a correlation between higher energy costs and the number of old people wondering around cosy shopping centres? Beats riding around on a bus all day long surely.
