Petrol And Diesel About To Be Hit With 2 Tax Hikes

The Bolivian government has hiked the country's fuel prices by over 70%.

Gas prices have jumped 73%, while diesel costs have risen 83%.

Bolivia's chief transport union called for an indefinite strike on Monday, as a result.

Well it's €0.85/litre here in Lanzarote... only c.€45 to fill up a small hatchback.

The fact that it is 23 degrees here, and that we spent the Christmas period swimming in the pool and at the beach is making me consider not coming home!!!!

For decades European countries have raped the Middle-East of their most valuable resource for pittance and then twisted the knife by placing huge taxes on petrol and diesel for Government coffers. It's beyond a disgrace.

If you're buying on a UK credit card and paying the banksters their fees its more expensive to fill up in most of the UK near neighbours. Best to buy a diesel if you want to fill up on the continent.

Still far far far too cheap judging by all the SUV tw@ts and campervans guzzling the stuff :D

Seems that oil is still dropping against Haddcok Fillets so nothing to worry about here.

Seems blizzards in Vermont are responsible for the latest rises:

Actulamente, before the Arabs started peddlng oil they were dirt poor nomads. Now they live in mind numbing luxury and buy what they want when they want it. I can remember sons (never saw the daughters--must have been kept under lock and key somewhere) of oil sheiks coming over in the early 1970's splashing monmey around the clubs while buying Astons and Mercs like we would buy a bar of choccy.

Thing is, the VAST majority of Arabs etc. are still dirt poor. Seems that all those billions they have been lifting from the pockets of the West, Japan and now China have not been spread around too widely. The Sheiks keep the masses in poverty and keep them docile by blaming their poverty on those who buy the oil. Decoy technique has worked quite well so far.

They'll blame a price rise on anything if it avoids admitting they have screwed up.

Yes but that should not stop some of us from engaging in an orgy of self flagellation. The rest of the world smells of roses and only cares for love and good intentions whereas all the world's ills are our fault and we should forever burn in hell don't you know?

It will mean an increased fuel bill of around £150 per month for the average articulated lorry and this will feed through to inflation in 2-3 months time.

Too true. Still lets continue trashing the currency. QE-2 anyone?

I wouldn't be surprised to see both a litre of petrol and a loaf of bread hit the £2 mark sometime in 2011.

I would say inflation on the things I actually buy- petrol, gas & electricity, rice, peas, bread, council tax etc is probably nearer 10% than the 4% the Government say is the inflation rate.

I suppose the increases are balanced out by decreases in other things like £20 off of the cost of a Sony Playstation or somesuch but I don't buy too many of those.

People refused to listen to the likes of Jim Rogers and Peter Schiff back in 08, even though they called TSHTF.

I can remember reading about how the more cultured Egyptians and Libyans consider the Saudis and such like to be super lucky hicks, sorta like the crass Hillbillies of the Arab world.

But if it gets trucks off the roads and the freight on to trains it will make savings else where.

What a good idea....I honestly can't understand why more long distance freight is not transported by train...I like trains they have so much going for them..they are in desperate need of further investment and expansion imo. ;)

It won't, firstly because rail freight is already far more expensive than road freight, secondly because the railways are already running at full capacity and thirdly because all proposals for new railways- which would take a decade to implement anyway- are met with fierce opposition from locals.

Higher fuel costs for trucks mean *you* will be paying more at the supermarket till in three months time. No exceptions, sorry.

Alright bread is 50p at Morrisons. Cheap bread can be bought for 47p in all Supermarkets. 800g loafs that is.

...a decade is only a blip in the scheme of things.....ripping much of the tracks up was a bit shortsighted of them...the railway is run in a very inefficient way, things could have been so very different....now is the time to start changing things for the better ;)

You might as well say we should bring back canals and horse-drawn barges, it's just not going to happen.

Unless it happens, fuel price and duty rises will continue to translate into higher bills at the supermarket checkout in everyday life.
