Petition Away!

Recommended Posts

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12084525

A plan to allow popular online petitions to be debated in Parliament within a year has been given the go ahead by the government.

Ministers will seek agreement with the authorities, including the House of Commons Procedure Committee, to give the petitions parliamentary time.

Those receiving most support - probably 100,000 signatures - would be debated, with some possibly becoming bills.

I can see a flaw in this form of digital democracy:

Campaign to save local post office: Struggles after 317 signatures

Campaign to save local hospital: Falters after 41,000 signatures

Campaign to legalise cannabis: Just makes it past the 100,000 mark

Campaign to legalise cannibalism: Over 3.5 million signtures.

Campaign to make Wagner off X Factor a member of the House of Lords: 15 million signatures

Students should lodge a petition for a debate on the reduction of student fees... a new one every week. Sort of like EU referenda, the MPs can keep on voting until they come to the correct result.

Seriously I think the idea of digital democracy is a good one in principle, but as I illustrated in my post above, it's open to misuse and to perverse outcomes. What happened with the campaign to make Rage Against the Machine the Christmas no.1 last year could also happen with political petitions.

And how much of it will just be popualist to satisfy the brain dead?

Students would have to have a petition such as

"To keep Wagbo in the xfactor and stop increasing student fees"

Which is what the second house is for...
