The eastern European states hoped to enter the passport-free Schengen zone in March, which would allow the free movement of their citizens between 25 EU countries. But France and Germany have urged the European Commission to postpone their inclusion indefinitely because of concerns about their failure to tackle corruption and organised crime since joining the EU three years ago. On the face of it, no big deal. But it shows the reality of the EU as an economic convenience during the good times that will not survive its first test. Closing certain borders relegates the EU to an immediate 2-tier "Union" which will be quickly followed by economic decisions to further isolate certain members who are unacceptable to those with the most power and influence. It also seems that "racism" flourishes in the EU--imagine such comments about the R & B folk being made here! IMO, it is RIP EU and EZ. On a more scary note, if the R & B migrants are blocked from the EZ perhaps they will see us as the soft option. Especially in light of the recent High Court decision preventing the Border Control people stopping those from OUTSIDE the EU coming in. Borders are not (edited) re-emerging, they simply had not fallen (with Romania and Bulgaria) because they are not in the EZ yet. Both countries have not done much to integrate and illegal immigration is already proving to be a real issue so just imagine what would happen if this immigration no longer was illegal! To join the euro you need to meet some criteria and your economy has to be strong enough so that your citizen are happy to live there and would not flee at the first opportunity. And before you Greece and Poland do meet those criteria, people there are not desperate to flee and never return. So basically, before the floodgates are open, more needs to be done for Romanians. Have you ever been to Romania? Before I first went there I had met a Romanian friend who had switched to Austrian nationality. I could not understand why anyone would want to switch nationality, then I went to Romania and I understood... What do you think would happen if for example Britain decided to let anyone from India get to the UK freely? So don't get too exited, this doesn't sound like the end of the EU/EZ, more like a realization that letting the world and his dog join the EU wasn't a good idea (PIGS) and it would be best to pause a bit. No doubt the Germans fear same but hide behind France...... It still doesnt mean that it will make easier for people from R & B to come to the UK though.... we are not in Schengen. An issue the the LibDems are surprisingly quiet on these days agreed, it will not make it easier (or more desirable) for them to go to the UK. One of the reason they go to France (Romanians) is that most older Romanians learnt to speak French (and speak it very well). For younger generations it is different, they do not speak a foreign language and would appear to speak poor Romanian as well, so for them the language won't be a "problem" although I suspect they will tend to go where other Romianians live, so continue to go to France, Germany and the rest... They can go anywhere in the EU, and can probably do it just with the respective national id card rather than a passport. The only possible exception is if they are Gypsies and wish to go France. No. The integration of the EU continues apace (think demolition of our military and 'co-operation' with the French to justify the rationale for an eventual pan-European military). Shot in the arm for our suffering, service industry cafes. We'll be missing out on a lucky heather bubble. Next to crab apples and wild mint, a better investment than property right now. And those dark-eyed gypsy girls . . . just hearbreaking. Moreover, without an influx of Romanians, what are all our diversity outreach people going to do all day. Lose their jobs? Hyperduck Quack Quack Posted December 24, 2010 Share Posted December 24, 2010 Most of tales of the eurozone collapsing or the EU breaking up come from those who are idealogically opposed to both those things in the first place. So what are the thoughts of people like myself who are generally pro euro and pro EU think? The euro currency is obviously having a tough time but the will is there to keep it alive and the real test is whether it can come through the debt crisis intact, without any member countries being forced out. I think it will survive intact because the alternative for a country that leaves is to create a new national currency from scratch, which will involve spending vast sums of public money, the last thing they'd be in a position to do. Apart from a few daft directives that the right-wing tabloids love to mock, the EU has been a good thing. But I'm not sure it should have expanded so quickly. But maybe the thinking was to get the new member states in, even if it caused problems, a bit like the re-unification of Germany was.
