My mate is thinking of leaving the country and wants to rent his house out, his sister would like it and thats suits him having someone he knows renting it. Thing is she lives in a council house and isnt working so gets her rent paid, could she get the rent paid if she rents the house from her brother? He would be asking market value for a furnished house, approx £500 pcm....thanks

Sister can sub let her council house and all sorted. Might even make a profit, thousands of people do it especially in central london boroughs.

Very nicely funds a stay in a country with a cheaper cost of living, ta UK tax payer - you've been mugged again. Not sure you can do it on 500 pcm though.

Tony McNulty may be able to advise. He managed to claim money for his parents house without them even having to move out, so he may have some ideas for even better taxpayer leeching scams.

not sure you can rent via HB of a relative.in fact I'm pretty sure you can't.

You can, *provided* that you can show it is truly a commercial arrangement and that you would enforce an eviction if they didn't pay the rent.

ISTM that is actually an impossible thing to do, but some people do manage it.

^ This.

It varies by council, many need you to show that it has been rented to tenants previously.

But surely they would not continue to pay HB on the council house, and ask if she needs it anymore.
