Hbos Shuts Midshires Branches

From the article:

"Halifax bought BM in 1999 for 780 million pounds. Since then its savings balances have doubled to 12 billion pounds and mortgage assets have trebled to over 32 billion pounds."

I find that phrase interesting. Aren't 'mortgage assets' really debts because the money used to supply the mortgage in turn is borrowed from others in the banking system?

More double-think?
