workhou
I don't wish to use any of the main street banks in the UK, is there anyway of 'doing my banking' without inadvertently supporting the system? I done a quick search I found one growing organisation of 'community banks' in London, which seems to be opening more branches. I live in the midlands but couldn't find anything similar near to where I'm from.. Years ago we used to have building societies, but they all got privatised right and turned into banks. Do any other community bank type organisations still exist in the UK now? If not why not?

porca misèria
Yes, there are still "building societies"! There's still a coop, too. And it's grown through the 'crisis'.
workhou
What I meant by community banks was credit unions. Growing in popularity it seems.. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/savings/8214641/Savers-spurn-banks-for-Zopa-style-peer-to-peer-lenders.html

Riedquat
If you can transfer money for free you could keep a current account with a major bank and just transfer enough into it every week (or whenever) to have easy access.

I've had to do this too due to there being no Co-op bank in my town.
