Osborne Says Iconic Red Budget Box Has Been Empty For Years, Keys Are Lost

Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said the iconic red box held aloft by his predecessors for decades just before delivering the annual budget has been empty for years because it is locked and the keys are missing.

“I’ll let you into a terrible truth, which is that the budget box is locked and the keys were lost years ago,” Osborne said at a lunch with political journalists in London yesterday. “So when the chancellor stands up with that old budget box, there is nothing in it and there hasn’t been for years.”

Osborne went on to reveal that the chancellor’s traditional robes “went missing” when Gordon Brown was in office between 1997 and 2007. He also described his battle with bureaucrats to prevent the Treasury spending 875 pounds ($1,380) on a Christmas tree. He was relaying “some of the things” he had learnt about government since the Conservative-led coalition took office in May.

Two months ago, Osborne detailed the deepest budget cuts ever in Britain, which included plans to eliminate more than 300,000 public-sector jobs and a two-year pay freeze. He called on banks yesterday to restrain bonus payments at a time of national austerity.

Did the keys go missing while crash Gordon was masquerading as a chancellor?

If so better check Tony Bliar's pocket

(Not a typo)

Gordon is so spiteful and weird he probably did a jumbo jobbie* in the budget box and hid the key somewhere no-one will ever find it. Perhaps the same place as his moral compass.

*The Young One's fans will get this.

As William Shatner said in Airplane! II, "Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes".

Osborne Says Iconic Red Budget Box Has Been Empty For Years, Keys Are Lost

1. spare keys?

2. Locksmith

3. If the government can't find someone to open it, we really do have no hope.

4. I bet it's not empty - GB MUST have put a note in there - maybe the secret of what he did with all our gold.

But does the iconic rocking horse still exist and nappy?

Osborne should show he, and the ConDems mean business and sell the old red ministerial box. Put it in to auction and use the proceeds towards something good like paying down the national debt. Best to do it now whilst there is still some money about and people spending. Probably fetch a good antique price.

There is a company with a £49,999 PFI contract to open the box in the event of the keys being lost. If anyone else tried to open it, that would break health and safety rules. Then the company would have to charge for health and safety inspections.
