Why House Prices Will Never Go Up Again

From a comedy site no less cracked.com

Futurists and sci-fi writers talk about a "post-scarcity" society, meaning it's like Star Trek, where matter replicators and fusion reactors have ended all shortages. On one hand, that now looks like a ridiculous pipe dream, but in a lot of areas of our life, we're already there. Think about the porn. There's more porn than air now. Literally -- air is limited, but we have machines that can convert energy into .jpegs of titties from now until the heat death of the universe. Titties are post-scarcity.

Now think about how many people you know who live in apartments or trailers barely big enough to host a game of Twister but who don't care because they spend every waking moment at home either playing World of Warcraft or surfing the Internet. They're not looking for a two-story house with a swimming pool and a white picket fence. With a $300 netbook and a $20-a-month Internet connection they can connect with friends, meet girls, get their entertainment, pursue their hobbies and stay in contact with family or co-workers. They may even work from home.

Look at how many of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs they're getting digitally:

Everything from that second tier to the capstone, they can get at a cost that rounds down to zero, if they so choose.

Some points of my own:

1 Neuromancer type of jacking in whereby you simply have an artificial reality pumped into your brain, why is there a need for a massive massive house when you can store it in your laptop or something? Since currently right now I run two businesses, they are pretty small but they have virtually no existence other than inside my hardrives and backup. Why is there a need for huge physical houses and such like when people spend their lives in the online realms? Like HPCers who have 30-40K posts they literally live on HPC. Why does the outside reality of their homes bother them? If I could simply jack into an artificial reality say a tropical paradise (such techs are closer than you think). A huge house with huge associated costs comes a distant second. *YMMV as I'm used to living in very spartan places. I mean do you remember the massive outcry when HPC changed the board skin or when functions simply ceased to work? Do people complain as vocally about real life things or just grumble?

2 The youth have been inadvertantly pushed into this. People who hoovered up the property meant younger people are unable to spend ££££s on homes being trapped, they can't afford it so many people live well into their 30s and 40s in shared houses thus find an escape into a virtual world again not needing huge houses. This form of online world is cheap, chatting for hours on HPC costs me little more than electricity and ISP fees and my time. They have seen it and experienced massive houses being out of reach and have been demotivated by it. Much like unachievable bonuses eventually people simply stop trying and do something else.

3 The youth simply are not having children any more or getting married, there is simple acceptance of this. Much like online dating 10 years ago was socially unacceptable it is now not exactly great but it is acceptable. Much like unmarried and having a baby. Thus they simply don't need big homes and the associated costs.

4 Because of crushing pressures, the youth again simply don't buy and own as much stuff as before. I look around me and almost everything is converted to 0s and 1s onto hard drives. Bar an old collection of books. Because they don't buy much physical stuff having the option to buy electronically or not even buy it downloading it off torrents etc. Why do people need large homes to store things? Even big things such as cars are out of reach of the youth due to insurance raping them.

So again why the need for a massive house?

Somebody provide some counter points to this.

1. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is complete and utter rubbish.

Birds* like big houses to show off to their friends. Whilst they make up half the population there will always be a demand for bigger houses.

* And some blokes as well.

Self Actualisation always sounds a bit mucky to me. Nothing wrong with that though.

Everyone would each need a massive house to hold the necessary storage and processing facilities - Moore's Law isn't going to hold forever.

Exactly. The guys sitting in their rooms in shared houses playing Warcraft, sure as hell aren't banging birds of the quality the top bankers are banging, if they're banging any at all, that is.

Want to be the Alpha Male and get the best quality of genetic reproductive material on the market? Better make sure you can afford to buy a f4ck off big house then, cos the fickle vixens seem to like that sort of thing. This is why there will always be demand for houses.

A 1TB drive currently fits in a space smaller than a cigarette carton. It would have to be gigantic to run out of space.

How do you figure that?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you telling me the average street sweeper or trolley boy has got the pick of the birds? Now your average guy who is priced out is not going to be fairing as badly as your typical street cleaner when it comes to the pick of hot chicks, but you can guarantee, that on average, the high rollers will be hitting higher scores with the quality of ladies available to them (looks wise at least), such is the way of nature (man being the protector and provider and all that - biggest/strongest Stag gets to rut with the best females etc.).

That is why I said 'looks wise', there is no accounting for personality, you need to keep an eye for those gold diggers, whatever your station in life.

Personally I am very lucky to have a wonderful lady who couldn't care less about such things, but then she is very different to many I have known before and I know exist.

House prices will go up again at some point. Every house that is lost to a hopeful potential first-timer is a gain for a potential landlord.

But for the foreseeable future I can't see much happening to house prices in either direction.

I agree that birds like to show off, but this doesnt need to be via a big house (owned).

If you can afford to rent a nice place, and use excess cash to drive a nice car or dress in designer gear then this satisfies the need to show off to friends as you're obviously doing well. Even better if you're also walking around with a fat wedge of cash in the bank.

Of my friends there isnt a perception that those that bought are doing any better, quite the opposite at the moment as mostly they bought on IO within the last 5 years. Its those who didnt buy that are percieved as doing better as we have considerably more spare cash...

Neuromancer seems to be a world close to present day - people are practically jacked in to this degree with some of the gaming about. Remember the korean guy who died at his PC? Think he starved to death after non-stop gaming.

Try SnowCrash, where they live in stacked up shipping containers, bare of anything other than a solid lock and a power supply - they jack into VR all day long, a world away from reality. I can see people being satisfied with this level of reality if their VR is good enough...

I think in real terms, and in relation to earnings, 2007's peak will never again be beaten.

Contrary to popular perception, the real cost of living is usually going down with development/progress.

A 1TB drive currently fits in a space smaller than a cigarette carton. It would have to be gigantic to run out of space.

Now add the necessary myriad processors, volatile memory, power supplies, interconnects and cooling hardware, plus everything else I forgot to mention. While you're at it, multiply that single laptop drive by a decent number for failure resilience and the sort of capacity a worthwhile Neuromancer-esque lifelike construct would likely require - a single terabyte  wouldn't do it.

Look at the size of processing farms used to chuck out CGI for movies, then bear in mind even these behemoths don't do it in anything like real time (and are apparently sufficiently expensive and scarce for resourcing to be a problem for the industry).

Okay, a modern games console can do things that twenty years ago would have been ludicrous, but we aren't going to see the same advances in hardware over the next twenty years.

Also, I don't expect to be able to connect a usb cable to my brain until at least USB 4.   :P

It probably wouldn't be photo/life realistic to start out with. Might just be vector or raster graphics transmitted to your nervous system to start with but in time I reckon it will be a closish fascimilie to reality. Which is probably good enough. For starters how closely do you look at things? Most people are concentrating on one thing usually. Like a TV set...

Heh its quite funny tbh as on one of my bikes I never looked at the speedo since I could tell my speed by how fast things were moving (since I've never gotten a speeding ticket I suppose I've been pretty sucessful). I did look at it a year after I bought the thing and noticed for the first time the speedo needles were white not red as I had imagined all along. Or how when you cut yourself but don't notice and therefore don't feel it until your cut feels wet then you loook and then feel the pain shortly afterwards.

No, but alpha gamers get the alpha gamer birds, whilst the rest get waggro. (*)

Bird often look for those at the top of the hierarchy, whatever that hierarchy is.

(*) waggro = "aggro" from the wife/gf.

An old friend of mine is a street sweeper, was going to be a pop star but all of a sudden turned 40 and found himself working at McCaca's still, and when they found out he'd turned 40 they sacked him. Anyway a few years later he graduated to street sweeping. One day after work and drinking half a dozen beers he was on the way home on the underground (In Vienna Austria where he lives) and a top looking female accosted him and directly asked him to take her home for a shag, Of course he was suspicious and thought she was a prostitute so asked her what she wanted, 'money' she said, as he suspected, so he told her he was a street sweeper and broke, so she said 'ok, I'll do it for free' and so it happened, over and over till she got bored a few weeks later and wanted money again, he had a shag with a good looking woman, she left with no mess behind, no expensive divorce or maintenance payments etc. Also he is an artist and painted maybe 20 nude paintings of her.

There are some benefits to being poor, no one can take what you havent got.
