South Lorne
I am all for peaceful protest and free speech. I actually don't agree with censorship of any kind. I just find it disgusting to see a statue of one of my heroes being treated like this. I imagine these cretins are stupid enough to document their antics on Facebook for posterity. You are right about emigration, which is ironic really. Technology will keep tabs on them forever now. It's probably best if they don't try to fly through Detroit or LAX for a while. ...this isn't free speech ...this is union inspired anarchy ...bottom line.... Met Commissioner should resign ...and Boris ...police running around like the 'keystone cops'...complete farce....bring in those who will instil law and order ....why should the streets be polluted with dregs like this...?.... cakehead
I really don't think you understand how this works. Young lady swings from flag and is demonised. She explains the frustration she felt at being forced to make this gesture to the press. The government become unpopular and its opponents gain respectability. Slightly less young lady is gathered to the bosom of the establishment as an icon/ living legend /saucy minx and given a column about women's problems or a seat on a quango. We live in a post-rebellion society, one where the government and media Borg assimilate protest and put it on a salary.
South Lorne
You should reserve your hero-worship for the 16-year-old children who actually went and died, rather than the fat Tory landowner who hid in a bunker and sent them off off to die ...young Winston went to war ...in your History.. Stalin was 'sent from the Lord'....
Xurbia
There was no victim. If the person had wassed up the leg of a cast bronze regency landowner there'd have been no fuss. I'm a huge admirer of Churchill but if you're offended by statue interference I suggest democratic society isn't for you. You really think that fighting the police over this is democratic. Elected MPs have made the decision. That is democracy. If you cannot see why this would offend the majority I feel very sorry for you. Do you feel it's honourable and acceptable to urinate in public? Is there no honour left in Britain? Feel free to urinate on my car. I'll try to be understanding but don't be surprised if you end up camping..... in an oxygen tent. You're really into this violence thing aren't you? Why would I urinate in your car, is it a neighbourhood problem in your area? Are you claiming personal ownership of the Churchill statue and drawing a parallel with your motor car? The allusion seems a little stretched. I can assure you that the police in my neighbourhood wouldn't tolerate this behaviour. You'd be dealt with. They have a reputation. I do claim part ownership of that statue and that's where we differ. That statue represents all that is good about being British. It's about time you pulled yourself together instead of yanking on it. payback period
'they signed a pledge and went back on their word'... But they didn't win the election LibDems held the balance of power after the election. No reason why this pledge couldn't have been part of the coalition agreement. 'poor people can't afford to go to uni'... There is no up front fee and the loan is repaid only if they earn over 21k They will be debt slaves for decades 'nasty Tories boo boo'... They are taking the only course of action available to them having been left a mess by the socialist idiots that misguided simpletons like you voted for time after time. How about higher taxes on second home owners and banks, and ending public sector final salary pensions to fund the universities?
South Lorne
LibDems held the balance of power after the election. No reason why this pledge couldn't have been part of the .coalition agreement. ....coalitions is what these trendy Liberals were voting for PR....they got it....and realised when they saw the books the country was almost bankrupted by labour ....PR means deals ...OK Liberals...?.... They will be debt slaves for decades ...after a specific time interval it is written off.... How about higher taxes on second home owners and banks, and ending public sector final salary pensions to fund the universities? ...good point re second homes ...the Banks already contribute taxes and Gordo was head of their supervision ...he should pay out of the profits from his book ...if he ever breaks even.....public sector pensions need controlling in these uncertain times .......coalition will get the blame ...but let's face it ...people who get things done are disliked ....but remind them ...no more 'U turns'.....and lead and manage the country ...just don't sit there ..... They will be debt slaves for decades How about higher taxes on second home owners and banks, and ending public sector final salary pensions to fund the universities? Coalition means neither side gets all they want. This was one they didn't get to keep. That's the reason. It could have been something else, but it wasn't. Yes they will be debt slaves for decades. Who isn't? Labour spent the money and engineered the conditions for property to suck up wealth. There's no money, this is part of the correction. It wasn't going to be nice. geezer466
What's funny about that? Clever? That Xmas Tree is a gift to the British people from the Norwegian people for the assistance we gave them in the second world war.. Not that I would expect any of these feckwick students to have known that that.

Unfortunately it seems represents all that was good about being British. People used to slash on war memorials and statues all the time up to about 5 years ago and nobody got too upset about it but we've changed. I think we've lost a lot of our inner strength since then, making us less able as a society to deal with it.

I'd rather student numbers were cut back to 150k than charging 450k of the £27000 each. We don't need 450k new degrees each year. Better to expend the effort in giving people a good secondary education.
Wahoo
I'm 100% against the students. They need to start living in the real world and start looking at the overall picture. The government simply cannot afford to pay for them to go to university. I don't have a problem with them protesting though. I do have a problem with the violent idiots who are just there to cause trouble. It's appalling. There would be plenty of money available, if it hadn't ended up in banksters pockets.
