Cantona's Bank Protest Set To Flop...

Recommended Posts

Eric Cantona's attempt to collapse the European financial system by orchestrating a run on the banks looks set to flop, with a slow trickle of people turning out to drain their accounts.

The plan, dubbed "Bankrun 2010", has been condemned by the French Banking Federation as "stupid in every sense" and "a charter for thieves".

Cantona, the actor and former Manchester United striker, hopes that 20 million people across Europe will bring down the banks by withdrawing their life savings today.

A slow trickle of customers turned up to empty their accounts in Paris this morning, but there was still no sign of queues forming 90 minutes after banks opened at 9am.

Didn't most of us say this would never work? This was such a badly-thought-out, short-sighted idea. Instead of "...being listened to in a different way..." he will just be laughed at in a different way. Which imo undermines the rest of us who are calling for changes in banking policy and better interest on our savings.

Tragic really.

Bank in Ireland had a nationwide ATM and online failure.

Really? Can't find this in any news - do you have a link?

Could it not just be coincedence? British and French banks appear to be just laughing it off

There are plenty in Ireland who are rightly pssed at the banks right now, it has a chance there.

In the UK nobody cares, the Soma shipments are still on time.

A) 85% of people don't care, the banks can screw them over and over, 85% if people won't revolt. Too much hassle, whats in it for them?

B ) General population "don't like" banks, but accept it because it's all they know, and talking number's turns people off.

C) For this plan to really work, they needed big queues to get the TV crews in, THEN you will have a bank run as the fear sets in.

D) Then the bank will collapse, then bailed out, back to square one.

I think a 10 minute screen hijack interruption of Coronation Street lastnight with a quick lesson on Modern Money Mechanic's would have done the masses some good.

better to take it out and buy silver instead

crash JP Morgan and the rest of the banks

if enough people would accept silver as payment it would screw them senseless

I know I would be happy to be paid and pay that way

No bank=No Mortgage=No house, so I think the majority of people will be gutted to loose their opportunity to make a killing on house prices.

No bank = constrained lending = HPC = affordable housing

Why would it = no house?

Yeah, 'cause people who like soaps are going to bring the banks down by taking their overdrafts elsewhere :-)

Right on - this is a huge success. It shows the system can be brought into democratic control with concerted effort by the population.

Congratulations to all those who made the effort to participate. Well done - huge success. We need to keep the ball rolling

Or perhaps it shows that banks occasionally do have technical glitches in their systems...

Or even engineer technical glitches to overcome the possibility of everyone trying to withdraw large sums of money at the same time?

yep, completely agree.

There's more of us than there are of them.

Maybe the bold Eric (Cantona, not our own Mr. Pebble !!) should get his own house in order before coming up with these silly campaigns. I don't know if it has been reported in the UK, but his wife Rachida Brakni has been appearing in ads recently for the national bank LCL (ex-Credit Lyonnais which went bust about 15yrs ago and cost taxpayers an arm and a leg to bail it out.....billions upon billions..... ).

For those than can read French :

http://fr.news.yahoo.com/55/20101207/tod-la-femme-d-eric-cantona-dans-une-pub-17baed7.html

Cantona has an overstated view of his own importance. He should stick to acting and organising beach soccer.

Just because he's appeared in a Ken Loach film, does he think he's a flag carrier for the oppressed and exploited???

If he had announced that he and his missus had handed all her LCL earnings to a decent charity (eg. Fondation Abbe Pierre, for the homeless) then maybe more people would take him seriously.

Otherwise, he comes across as doing this stunt for the usual reasons that "stars" do...ie. self-promotion.
