Independent article

Cut to a Saturday night inside the said Don Jose "club" – three storeys high, flashing neon lights, two bars, a VIP zone and some 70 sex workers, clad in everything from nightgowns to G-strings to the very briefest of shorts – and, according to local regulars, business is booming. "The place is heaving every weekend," comments "Alvaro", an experienced brothel-goer in his late forties. "These days in the afternoons and early evenings, you'll get businessmen who've told their wives they're at meetings. Then later on, there are hordes of 18- or 19-year-olds, just there to have a laugh and, if they want, have a quick lay as well."

Plenty of people with money to waste still.

More than there is now? On my bike tours of spain I passed 1000s of Chair ladies at the side of the road, each time I stopped for gas a woman would approach me. When you settle in a campsite (rough or legal) women pop their heads into your tend solicit you!

Seems a smart financial move to me in times of austerity.

Stick to railing wh0res at what, 60 euros a go? No need for over priced meal, cinema, flowers and you are 100% guaranteed a result. Also if you avoid getting married there is no chance of losing half your net worth and being stuck in a negitive equity hell hole with someone that hates you....

Oddly enough, I was about to start a topic on the large increase I have seen, in the past couple of months, on vanilla dating sites in the UK of female 'advertisers' either openly advertising their 'services', or requesting a tribute or, in several cases, gift vouchers to various stores. I just saw one wanting Amazon vouchers.

I stay in hotels fairly reguarly with work and the number of prostitutes I've seen entering and leaving has definitely risen dramatically (not to my room I hasten to add). Even during the holidays when it's busy with kids you see them walking in and out. The last straw was when I was in the lift a couple of months back and a strapping 6' male, square-jawed, same-sex prostitute in leather skirt and frilly blouse walked into the lift I was in, followed by his embarrassed looking client, a tiny bespectaled man in his 40's (you have to swipe the doors, so annoying if you have "guests"). I didn't know whether to laugh, cry or puke as they got out of the lift.

Some guys I work with were in a 'russian bar' in Bahrain last month. Anyway this girl was dancing around provactively. She came up to them and one of the guys asked slowly and careful - where in Russia are you from? She replied in a thick Yorkshire accent, Im from Barnsley - Yorkshire

Doesn't that kind of thing get you put to the sword in your part of the world?

I was in Ednburgh a few months back, wandering round a fairly central part of Edniburgh (about 10 min bus ride from princes street), and saw several massage parlours in one street - just a normal street, newsagents, video rental shop, whorehouse all in a row. It must be tolerated in Scotland, as these are public shop front businesses.

I took a look in the window quicky of one and wasn't half tempted, the woman looked very attractive indeed. I'm not sure what my own stance on prostitution is, it's very very tempting at times to visit one but I have this feeling that I'd probably feel really shit afterwards. Like I'd sunk to a new low or something. Even though logically, as long as the woman involved isn't being forced to do it, it's no worse than shagging a stranger you meet in a nightclub. And it's more honest than alot of 'normal' relationships I see people having.

The Arabian penninsula isn't exactly one of the places on my tourist list, though I was considering an escape route via Port Sudan and Jeddah before running north to Jordan or Iraq.

Saudi don't go big on tourists unless you are on the harj to the Prophets (peace be upon him) home town.

Bahrain and Dubai pretty liberal - they key is to not be overt in public - like those morons who got caught having sex on the beach in Dubai.

In your case Ken I would recommend not doing the Saudi western hinterlands on your bike. With your luck you will get gang raped and have your throat slit

Mind you - you could always consider getting over to Tanajib - Manifa near the Kuwaiti border. I hear some of the Filipino boys do a cracking evening trade at the contractor camps. Just need some veet hair remover and vaseline - all available at the Commissary's

Transit visas are still handed out in Port Sudan as long as you get out within 48 hours and pass the security checks and don't have an Israeli stamp in your passport. The opposite way is not true though from Jordan.

Saudi was merely an escape route, (emphasis on WAS as this trip is pretty much canned due to something bigger coming up later on) as the only other exits were:

Eygpt but they need an 850% carnet

Chad/Libya are closed

Algeria is closed , though Algeria needs a fuel dump mission if you want to do the whole desert

Meaning Morrocco and Saud the only feasible routes out of the continent. Morrocco means dodgy countries like Nigeria.

Where was this ? There are no places in Edinburgh where you can 'look in' to see the birds inside. There are a fair few lap dancing bars and massage parlours though - generally known as 'saunas'.

Unless I have missed them they are not all close together either. Few places near the city centre where they are near by but nowhere they are all the same street. Well not obviously visible anyway. There is a street where there are a fair though but they are all tucked up behind the main street.

Anyway...

PS - Hope you enjoyed it - some of them are very fit. :D

Lol, the neighbours were telling me the knocking shop down the road charges £35. That's some pretty serious inflation.

I wonder how much she gets in Russia.

I was on vacation in Malaysian Borneo last month . A single male minding his own business and interested only in the wildlife and scenery. Very Islamic with an anti-western feel.

But in the course of a few days I was approached numerous times by local men offering their unwanted services and on my last night in the hotel an elderly Brit (Manchester ) came in with his very young Malaysian boyfriend and sat close to me (God knows why, there were plenty of available tables)and they were sickening to watch .

This was not Bankok or Bali but a very remote part of Sarawak . I now realise, sadly, that there is no corner of the globe that escapes these sordid Glitteresque freaks as they prey on the young and the desperate.

The number of women registering on escorting websites is going up alot all age groups. I think it confirms Stephen Fry's observation about women and sex personally.

Had a look at a few of them recently for Edinburgh - they do seem to be getting alot of newbies.

Seems their standard charge is £130 for an hour. By the looks of it a lot of them do a lot for that too.

Considering you pay £10 or more for a 3 minute lap dance - an hour of full on sex with a serioulsy fit bird seems quite a good deal.

Not been tempted yet but you never know !!

Personally I like Saudi's / Arabs. I find them friendly, willing to help and hospitable. They dont have much of a work ethic. You have to understand it is a different place with very different customs (which even if you dont agree with wont change overnight) ingrained over 1000's years. Respect the customs and in particular the reverence of their faith and you get on fine. There is a lot of security but you just fully cooperate, be very polite, lay it on thick (they love that) and everything goes smoothly if sometimes a little slow :)

I like it here - nice weather, no aggro, no chavs, interesting work, shed loads of cash (Id work here for less but keep that to myself ;) )

Yes but after a few hours your balls will fill back up and then it doesn't seem such a bad idea after all!

Yes, it's the respect and reverence of the faith bit that I have a major problem with. How can you have respect for a people that are on their hands and knees 4 times a day, and for the rest of the time they are dedicating themselves to corruption , collusion, nepotism and the unadulterated worship of the cult of "I ME MINE"? Where people with unimaginable wealth can pass lepers in the street without give them a second thought.

I thought Indonesia was bad when it came to corruption , but last year I needed the assistance of a forensic guy who was "lost" in Saudi. When he eventually turned up he explained that his problems were related to certain unofficial payments he was required to make to lubricate wheels. He explained that we in Indonesia , are still novices when compared to Saudi. Hard to believe.

Certainly it's nice to live without the chavs and the over-regulation and the football, but your soul?
