Blags Cons And Scams

Just reading the thread about youth unemployment and saw a couple of scams involving pensions that reminded me of someone from a town near mine many years ago who worked in a post office. When pensioners that collected their pensions from her office died, she never informed the relevant authorities and continued to claim all their pensions, until she got caught of course. Another person I know of has access to a large foreign bank account that came with his wife that serves as (it is presumed) totally undeclared income (but no proof of this).

Any other interesting blags, cons and scams that have come your way?

Yep, go to the ATM and withdraw £300. When the money comes out of the slot, leave the top and bottom banknote where they are and pull out all of the notes in between. Put them in your pocket.

After 25 seconds, the sensor in the ATM will detect that the cash has not been removed, will pull it back into the machine and cancel the transaction.

You can do this all day long, they never suss it out. ;)

Having to pay £300 per year to Islington council just to park my car on the street comes to mind.

It's not even in the most expensive category.

It's 50% more than a years "road tax", more than the insurance, and more than half the value of the car.

The last time that happened to me I "took" fifty quid out of the cashpoint on my way into work with a horrendous hangover.

So horrendous a hangover that I forgot to actually take the cash, walked 30 feet up the road, figured out somehow something was wrong, walked back to the machine just in time to see my notes withdrawn back within.

I went into the bank and explained what happened, but it turned out the paperwork involved was far too complicated to be worth it.

Gave up.

Interesting but more of a simple theft than a blag, con or scam wouldn't you say? The pensions thing took planning - a real long con, if you like. Fascinating how ingenious these toerags are though. This kind of thing just would not occur to me. I am depressingly honest and very poor as a consequence...... I found a wallet once on a bus going into London and it was stuffed with notes - and yes, I handed it to the bus driver.

To this day I wonder if he did the honest thing or just kept the reddies himself.

Was that 50 registered as having left your account then? One of the cashpoints I use always leads you though the button-pushing right up to the "please take you cash" stage but then often doesn't give you any money - but it has never registered as having left my account or I would be in the bank in a second.

If you buy from any retailer offering goods on Interest Free credit - the goods you are buying are already marked up 15% minimum moor than necessary to pay off the BANKS who the retailer is tied to.

Banks win yet again with fees/extra charges/huge interest rates payable on the whole sum from the 'known' percentage who will not pay the whole sum off in the allotted time period.

Utter SCAM!

"How about interest free credit, do the banks give the cash to the retailer for NOTHING?

NO, in my opinion the cost of interest is already built into the selling price"

As a small business owner selling kitchens I can confirm you are 100% correct. I investigated 0% finance and it would have cost me around 15% for every penny I lent interest free. Faced with the choice of having to add 15% to my prices to keep a healthy margin and therefore rip-off my 'cash' customers I declined the banks offer.

I also use this knowledge to negotiate large 'discounts' at the likes of DFS. I got 13% off my last sofa purchase."

Yeah, of course. Apparently I had to do all sorts of shit to say I'd not taken it, plus rely on the ATM being 50 up, or something.

Like I said, it was a bad hangover. £50 seemed cheap at the time.

But the £50 that went back into the machine did not seem to be heading back to my account with any degree of ease or rapidity according to the banks tale that dreadful morning.

I actually have a good Bank story...:o

Got ripped off for close to 2k by a dodgy strip club in Hamburg. Posted about it on here but cant be arsed finding it.

In the end the Bank's automated fraud system detected the strange transactions, more dodgy attempts were declined. I got a phone call the next morning from their Fraud team asking me questions about where I had been the night before - was intersting explaining !! Within about a month got every penny back. Even the €300 or so that I admitted I had paid for certain friendly services within said club.

Now that is good customer service.

I was 100% honest with them rather than trying to ******** them. Appeared to work rather well.

So what I don't get then is how come you ordered 50 that got sucked back in but was registered as having left your account, while Harry Monk's post says he keeps the notes in the middle and lets the top and bottom ones get sucked back in - and thereby registering all the money as not having left his account. Seems like two different things going on here.

Just out of idle curiosity - is there anything in your life that doesn't revolve around sex?

Yes, I imagine that lots of people forget to take the money, I suppose it all just balances itself out in the end.

Well, my experience was different to his, in that respect!

I just looked into this on another forum and one poster said that he deliberately let the ATM suck the money back in so he could check and when he did a balance enquiry it stated he had withdrawn the money, so he had to go into the bank and get it manually recredited to his account.

If this works every time with you then it looks like you have a very shit/amazing bank depending on your perspective!

There was also beer involved. That is far more important than sex. And I get it far more regularly too. :D

Ok, so according to my researches, ATMs were programmed not to subtract money from a holder's account when the money was sucked back in, but due to the massive levels of fraud they generally started to programme the ATMs to subtract the money and sort out the problem later on when the holder came in to complain. I do not know how anyone can get away with this in 2010 unless their bank is way behind the times.

Any other interesting blags, cons and scams that have come your way?

I love scams .. nothing I love more than someone trying to scam me ..

One interesting one is the "Money for petrol" scam with a twist .. This has happened to me twice now .. Once in Denmark and a second time in in the Czech Republic ..

The scam is that a car flashes you down on the motorway .. usually close to the border .. you stop and the occupants tell you they are also foriegners and have run out of petrol and need money to get home .. I suggest they call the German consulate (the car always has a German number but the guys in both cases were of apparently Turkish origin) .. this always happens within a few KM's of the border and to cars not from either of the countries the border covers ..

On the Czech one I videoed the guy with my phone as he walked up to the car .. he was very very pissed off and kept telling me to give him the phone .. a Policie car drove past and I flashed my lights at it and they slowed down to stop and the German registered car spun off .. they went after the German car and forced it to stop at the next Policie office .. As I drove up to this office they flagged me down as well ..

The Statni Slusby were very interested .. but sadly dissapointed .. apparently people had been targeting foriegners in similar situation pretending to be State Security and "Fineing" people €100 for "Speeding" or "Not displaying a valid tax disk" etc etc .. As they hadn't even solicited money from me and now refused to speak English, German or Czech and nothing incrimiating was found in the car (fake tickets etc) just €2500 in cash. They escorted them to Germany ..

Every time I use money other than physical cash I am reminded of the greatest scam of all.

That we as a trading people are compelled to borrow at interest our means of exchange from a controlling minority, when we could perfectly well provide ourselves with an adequate, debt-free, publicly issued, persistently circulating means of exchange.

Buy a garage. £20-50k will cost you £1K+ a year and you get to keep your car dry.
