Mike Nicol, manager of the Merrion Absolute Return fund, found profitable shorts on housebuilders Barratt Developments <BDEV.L> and Taylor Wimpey, which both fell by around 20 percent last month even as the FTSE 100 gained 2.2 percent. "We've seen shorts on indexes and baskets switched to single-name shorts," said one prime broker on condition of anonymity. "They (managers) have been watching markets and, as correlations (on returns) have fallen, have started shorting specific names."
