Ross Perot was a self made billionaire, founder of EDS, and presidential candidate in the early '90's. When the US government failed to gain release of the American hostages in Iran during the late '70's, he hired his own team and organized and rescued the EDS employees there. This story later became the basis of the book 'On the Wings of Eagles' by Ken Follet. In this video, you can see he pulls no punches about the so-called free trade agreements, and the damage they would cause.

During that election, he mysteriously withdrew from active campaigning. There were rumours that his children had become the subjects of a dirty tricks smear campaign (Perot claimed it was a covert operation). No wonder given the trade stance that he was taking. As an outsider he must have upset a number of major players.

And as to Bill Clinton, check out the book by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, The Secret Life of Bill Clinton, the Unreported Stories. Fully footnoted and eye-popping. Evans-Pritchard details the connection between Clinton as Arkansas Governor and the covert CIA drug smuggling operations allegedly under the auspices of George Bush Sr, that used the Little Rock Airport. He also connects Clinton to the Dixie Mafia (a particularly nasty criminal group that not many people hear about). To my knowledge, Evans-Pritchard has never been sued over these allegations. They have stood uncontested.

For those who blame this crisis on the bankers, nope, It was your leaders wot done it. It's time to get down to brass tacks...

Well said sir! Everyone knows how to do effects and swirls and upload to wasteoftimetube, but ask them to do something that might actually prove useful on their PC like a Pivot Table and all you'll get is a blank stare.

are we agreed, right message, but poor execution?

no because protectionism a swift route to global poverty.

If protectionism is the right way to go, why not take it to its logical conclusion and prevent counties and cities and families from trading with each other?

That way we all have to be self sufficient and we will all be employed.

I don't think it advocated protectionism, and the idea of having a trade agreement that is fair should not be construed as protectionism, imv. I think the point of the film was to string together the major factors of the last 20 years or so, and to highlight that during this entire time the US was increasing international military activity, much of it based upon shaky ground. Someone like Perot, who had built an international business from scratch to a $2.5 billion sale in the early 1980's, would not be the type of person who is against international trade.

I personally think that the doors were opened too wide and too quickly, without much thought, by the US. No other superpower in history has ever done this, and I don't think that any thought was put into the resulting deterioration of the social fabric in the US.

About the time of these debates, Sir James Goldsmith was also railing against these free trade agreements (during his run for MEP), saying essentially that the process should be allowed more time.

Unfortunately now there is the very real risk of protectionism, which again would be a knee jerk reaction to the problems that we face.

Goldsmith predicted that GATT would be catastrophic. His prediction may be coming true.
