Pole
So, the Twinings tea firm gets £10m from the Polish government and now moves to Poland. As a result 286 British jobs are lost. Now, lots of Daily Mail readers are expressing their patriotic anger (link). But if you go to Polish news websites - people aren't happy there, too! When you think about it - the Polish government is paying Twinings around £35k per vacancy here. It's a huge grant! For what??? For 286 minimum wage jobs...??? And I bet that after 10 years the factory will be moved to another country with even cheaper labour rates and more government grants... To add to the irony, if you try to buy the Twinings tea in a Polish supermarket, you'll discover that it is on average three times more expensive than in the UK! So, this company is milking not only workers and taxpayers but also consumers... So, there are no winning nations here, except for the private owners of Twinings... It only confirms that the world is not run by national governments but exclusively by banks and private corporations... Edited November 6, 2010 by Pole
aa3
No one wins in a race to the bottom. Imo we need to start co-operating with each other instead of beating each other down. Britain needs to make things and tea is a good historic industry for us. People need jobs and people who work an honest work week doing something real.. need to make some real money. People in Poland also need real jobs that make real money.
billybong
And the quality of Twinings tea will get worse and worse with each move and as time goes on. No wonder people are changing to alternatives. It would be good if Twinings moved their headquarters and boardroom there as well. feed
So, there are no winning nations here, except for the private owners of Twinings... Twinings is an Associated British Foods brand. 54.5% of ABF is owned by Wittington Investments. Wittington Investments Limited is an unquoted British investment company. It is 79.2% owned by the Garfield Weston Foundation, George Weston and family Times rich list . RESULTS FOR 2008 Ranking: 71= Worth: £1,000m Source of wealth: Retailing /snip Dublin-based fashion retailer Primark, with 173 stores, remains the star performer for its parent Associated British Foods (ABF), the food to retail group. Weston, 44, who is piloting the growth of Primark, led by its flagship Oxford Street store in London, issued a trading update in February saying the group expected good growth. As a result, its shares have largely escaped the worst of the market turmoil. The Weston family has a £900m stake in ABF. Nations don't exist. The wealthy, and I mean the really wealthly, know this. Edit to add: Google is your friend. Taken from Wiki, Business week and the Times in about 10 minutes. Edit to add 2. I'm sure the Polish Government will have more o their agenda than just Twinings. ABF has many brands. Edited November 6, 2010 by feed

Big Orange
The EU could be much more wonderful and genuinely beneficial but it's another avanue of outsourcing for the Anglo-American based corporetards who have a pathological hard on for the ostensively cheapest labour possible. I'm not surprised that Eastern Europeans don't have any real benefits from the corporate take over of their countries and being inducted as wage serfs across the continent. Neo-Liberalism is so over, why do these corporate tools keep on doing this, when they're clearly undermining the whole point of providing products and services? ScaredEitherWay
Buy Tregothnan Tea - it's grown in Cornwall. http://www.tregothnan.co.uk/tea/p_302/ Mind you, it's £3.50 for 10 sachets of Classic Tea (20g) in their online shop Tregothnan Tea ... it's posh innit. No wonder people are changing to alternatives. It would be good if Twinings moved their headquarters and boardroom there as well. Same thing happened to a Philips plant locally a few years back. All machines moved across which made lightbulbs. They could produce approx 4 times more for the same cost as here, but the scrap rate was much higher (lower quality). So they can afford for quality to slip as long as production was higher and costs much lower.

That reminded me of a TV show a few years ago with a bloke who had a regular spot on TV chewing and eating light bulbs (40W, 60W 100W you name it but well before the modern mercury filled spiral type bulbs which I guess he wouldn't ever touch). A sword swallower and fire eater as well. It likely wouldn't be allowed these days for PC and H&S reasons but he thought it was good fun. Don't try this at home and all that He was amazing but he didn't make any comment on which light bulbs tasted best. He didn't seem bothered about the taste. porca misèria
So, the Twinings tea firm gets £10m from the Polish government and now moves to Poland. As a result 286 British jobs are lost. Government meddling always has a big downside. Any upside is much more uncommon, and certainly doesn't happen when the meddling involves big payouts to established businesses without major innovation. It only confirms that the world is not run by national governments but exclusively by banks and private corporations... Erm, what was that about the Polish government? Some companies make a whole business model out of grabbing payouts from government troughs. Ryanair springs to mind as the most famously successful example, going so far as to throw its toys out of the pram anytime someone threatens to take away a subsidy. chris25
Now, lots of Daily Mail readers are expressing their patriotic anger Perhaps in this case it is different, but every "patriotic" person seems to get angry when a factory closes whilst they drive their German car, whilst watching their Korean TV, whilst buying the cheapest of the cheap Chinese tat. matroskin
No one wins in a race to the bottom. Imo we need to start co-operating with each other instead of beating each other down You mean like British tycoons co-operating with foreigh oligarchs? Not going to happen, it's "dog eats dog" world Or like British govt co-operating with foreign govts? How is this for starters: withdraw all troops, then offer a full apology and compensation to Iraq and Afgrahistan Or like British people co-operating with foreigners? Look no further than "British jobs for British people" slogan pushers and immigration (de)cappers - same people Edited November 7, 2010 by matroskin

After turning off the taps supporting Ireland and Spanish booms the EU started throwing Billions at Poland and other nearby Eastern European countries. Why do you think Dell deserted Ireland for Poland, Cadburys shut down production in England and moved to Poland (several others too) now Twinings. The Polish Government are using our Tax euros (Billions given to them by the EU) to support the swindling of our people - so some company bosses can make bigger profits! This swindle has been going on in Scotland/South Wales etc where Japanese and other countries set up for the tax/rates free period (and the Golden hellos) then shut the companies/factories down soon after it ends. It's a Global con these Global companies play to maximise their profits for top management and a few shareholders. Free cash give_aways!
