Ban On New Pubs

Recommended Posts

No new pubs for West Dunbartonshire

Council makes unusual licensing step in an effort to tackle booze culture.

A ban has been placed on any new pubs, clubs and off-licences opening in almost every street of West Dunbartonshire.

The unusual step, believed to be the first in Scotland, has been taken to tackle the area’s chronic alcohol-related problems.

The new overprovision policy covers 15 of the 18 areas in West Dunbartonshire and will allow the licensing board to reject all new liquor licence applications on the basis that these areas are already saturated with such venues........

More crazy and worrying govt meddling. If there are so many boozers already in the area, i really cant see how stopping new ones opening is going to get people off the drink. It will certainly benefit the existing pubs and off licenses though, by stifling competition. Bet the existing ones are loving this.

Yeah - they'll love it...until the authorities decide to close some of them down, too. It's only a matter of time.ph34r.gif

Scotland appears to be a socialist control freak paradise.

I first saw this story on the scottish news last night on the telly. The reporter mentioned that other local authorities across the country may be going to impose similar measures in areas with alcohol problems.

They're only going to drive hardened drinkers underground. When are they going to ban alcohol completely?

Yep - coz in West Dunbartonshire the 'Booze' culture is firlmy rooted in all the pubs...........not.

Half of the jakie alkies are unemployed. And even with generous benefits - they cant exactly sit in the boozer all day every day.

Yep. If they keep on voting Labour and SNP politicians into office though they deserve everything they get. I bet those free prescriptions don't look like such a sweet deal now.

Went to our local the other Sunday lunch...the local football team (nice lads) turned up for some finger food laid on and a drink, most of them were drinking cola. ;)

Like that worked really well.

I have a better Idea.Let them arrange their own tax-collection/spending....no more barnett formula.

If they want free prescriptions, then they have the capacity to put alcohol prices up to a more appropriate level.....like £6 a pint.

...of course they will never do it,because people will just see what a bunch of puritans are in power up there, and will vote with their feet.

Local council bans new pubs - odds on one or more of the councillors have recently bought a couple of pubs.

Ban on new pubs? I'd be happy just to see the number closing to stop going up.

The pubs that are closing are poor ones.

Soon all that will be left will is a Wetherspoons in every town centre. What a terrible thought.

What's wrong with that. They do great ale. There will always be the crappy council estate pubs for people that like to have the bar blocked by aggressive punters all drinking Carling or Smiths.
