Apparently he reacted with fury to Labour's criticism of the Housing Benefit changes

And at the weekend he was reported as being furious about the IFS saying cutting benefits would hit the poor

Is this the best way to win an argument?

Is he feeling the pressure from his own troops?

Clegg fury over 'cleansing' claim

If you believe that House Prices Will fall. [Which they will]

Then the losers will be the Landlords, and not the Tenants.

Why should the taxpayer fund inflated housing in overpriced areas?

Excellent reply from Clegg.

I had just watched part of it on Channel 4 News, but Clegg's reply was cut short, very short.

ToW just owned FS there... well done

Agreed.

Until someone can explain the fairness in the fact that a family earning 60k a year, paying taxes and struggling to "hang on" in Hendon should contribute towards paying HB for someone to live better than they do in Hampstead, I struggle to understand the fury about the dislocations that might be caused by the caps on HB.

In my view, HB should be set at a national level just like all other benefits and recipients should have to make the same choices as non-recipients about where and how to live.

Oh do f*ck off you ghastly fascist with your ignorant drivel about free trade, public sector waste (except for some reason you've discovered the public sector waste on housing benefit is in fact free money given to private sector landlords - funny how you single out that one - could it be 'cause you want a cheap house for yourself?) and globalism.

Nick Clegg was clearly angry at being exposed as a liberal who is cleansing the poor from areas of London they're not wanted by the banksters, Tories and Russians. People who Dave and Boris work for using 'austerity' as a convenient excuse. Even some of your fascist chums are speaking out about the trainloads of poor being shipped out of London.

Go stick your personal insults and your free market exploitation and your colonialsm up your ar5e. I couldn't give a f*ck what you and your fascist minded chums think of say. The only person you're interest in is yourself.

F*ck

Off.

errr.. ran out of tampons today?

I think there is cross societal and cross-political concern about benefits levels, the traditional labour support base has a work ethic, albeit a socialist one, but a work ethic nonetheless, so I suspect that the opposition may be shooting themselves in the foot with this.

I think you will find that the HB claimants in central London are in areas that no bankster, Tory or Russian would venture into. They are already ghettoised but because they are in close proximity to some of the most expensive real estate on the planet the slum landlords receive obscene payments.

These claims of cleansing are about the most ridiculous and hysterical I have come across since weapons of mass destruction.

Another factor to consider is that people who were previously apolitical and apathetic might be becoming more engaged due to the difficult circumstances facing our economy. This is giving rise to some fringe parties. If "Middle England" becomes more engaged in politics and voter turnout at the next election increases, I expect this to turn into a debacle for Labour.

Politics in the last decade or so has been done within the political class subset of the nation.

A lot of the arguments from the right are superficially compelling e.g. the nation's finances are the same as a credit card. This particular debate reminds me of the 1980s where the Tories were warned of the long tem social dangers of, for example, letting heavy manufacturing disappear, but there was the simplistic response that they must stand on their own feet. Those disastrous decisons still haunt us. And the very people who were damaged are the ones we blame now for all sorts of ills. I think once again we could see similar social consequences here.

Err Boris has opposed the LHA cuts.

Clegg is a true liberal. This means not just social liberal but economically liberal. It does not make sense to provide government subsidy to modern day Rachmans.

There is a serious point being made here and by Clegg in his response and that is that the word ‘cleansed’ was quite blatantly inserted into the statement by the Labour machine – and used in subsequent announcements – as a way of connecting ethnic cleansing and what the Tories/Libs are doing… they are attempting to draw subtle parallels between these horrific events caused by evil dictators throughout history with the current incumbents.

I suggest that the use of the word ‘cleansing’ was predetermined to do just that and as such is pretty cynical use of psychology, pretty pathetic and just the sort of thing I have come to expect (and be let down) from politics these days.

I am no fan of the conservatives but your post seems to miss the point with this.

I think there's a belief by some of the daily mail readers on this forum that housing benefit cuts will cause a housing and rent crash.

It's not that simple I'm afraid, and these landlords know this and that's why there is no rush to reduce rents. Most of these landlords don't have debts or mortgages to service hence no rush.

People really should have some sympathy for the millions of people that face real hardship because of these cuts. Lots of these people may have lost jobs and homes and have young families to support. Those people on here that gloat over other peoples bad luck should take some time to think.

Agreed. And as a point to clarify, When Labour stooges accuse the coalition of social engineering - can I just ask: How can supplying a ludicrous and patently unfair HB NOT be social engineering, whilst reducing this benefit apparently IS social engineering?

Purest doublethink from the party that invented doublethink. Dangerous nonsense in other words. God they make me sick.
