Mr Cameron will take up the position with the privately-owned investment banking firm just five months after he was banned from a full-time job in banking by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and accepted a "share of responsibility" in the near-collapse of RBS.

As part of that ruling, the regulator told the former RBS executive he could take on "part-time consultancy work" in the sector. The FSA has already cleared his role with Gleacher Shacklock.

Last night, Gleacher Shacklock, whose clients include Four Seasons and BAE, said it was "very pleased" to have signed up Mr Cameron. A spokesman added: "He is a man with an immense wealth of experience."

The role will be Mr Cameron's third attempt at returning to the City. The FSA blocked his efforts to take up an advisory role at Greenhill, the investment bank, and he stepped down from headhunting firm Odgers Berndtson within weeks of state-owned UK Financial Investments withdrawing a crucial contract.

The 56-year old will advise Gleacher Shacklock through Caps Advisory, a consultancy vehicle he set up in July, as revealed by The Sunday Telegraph.

Mr Cameron told Sky News last night that he would be "helping Gleacher Shacklock with client development and active support in specific situations".

RBS, now 83pc owned by the taxpayer, was bailed out by the Government after its takeover of Dutch lender ABN Amro backfired spectacularly. Mr Cameron, who worked closely with former RBS boss Sir Fred Goodwin, left the bank in January 2009.

In May this year, after an FSA investigation, Mr Cameron agreed not to perform any "significant influence function" at a City firm or "undertake any further full-time employment in the financial services industry".

However, he was cleared of any wrongdoing.

Skimmers, scammers and scummers. A slap on the wrist, pat on the back and off you go. Lord Turner's tough new FSA regime.

We're all in this together, though some are clearly more in it than others.

and here's the article following the earlier FSA action

Would you say the equivalent in the real world is catching a mass murderer of children, letting him go as long as he stays away from children, then giving him a job in a school?
