Manualy or using a free software tool?

Not very computer literate! Please help!

Have you downloaded and ran?

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Hadnt done a scan on my laptop since mid august. I downloaded your software and did a scan. Laptop came up clean.

I then did a scan with my avira antivirus and it had 4 detections and 5 warnings.

Your software has already been uninstalled.

OP, download some descent protection. Avira, and Avast are the best of the free ones, they each have pro's and cons.

Edit to add - I have had mcafee and nortons in the past, Avira isnt just the best of the free anti virus protection, it is far better than both of those.

Err what's "safe mode"?

Spiney.

Press F8 shortly after booting, (before windows starts loading) and you will see a menu. Select the top option, and this will boot into Windows, with only important system files and drivers loaded. It will allow you to clean any infected files better than from the normal windows environment.

Edit: Richyc - Avira may well have given you false positives. I would put malwarebytes back on if I were you. No harm in having them both on, as malwarebytes doesn't do background scanning. It is also highly rated.

Malwarebytes isn't an antivirus, it should be used alongside one

No false detections but I know that avira tends to pick up a lot of unnecessary warnings. I will look around for reviews though and see what's what.

Superantispyware (I kid you not) is just as good as Malwarebytes and I think thre is a standalone scanner that changes every day with the latest definitions. This is good if the spyware has knocked out your t'internet and you can't download the malwarebytes definition.

Although he didn't have to do it in this case, he should've renamed the downloaded malwarebytes exe as some smart spyware can spot this is what you are installing.
