Taxing Multiple Home Ownership

Recommended Posts

Remember, the idea would be to raise as much tax money as possible, not (necessarily) cause a HPC.

How much are companies to set up and how long does name changing take these days?

I dont mind someone owning multiple housing...I object to mortgages on these receiving tax free status though.

In fact, I object to mortgages at all on residential property.

Given that we have mortgages on both, I don't see how we would be able to move to a society without - rightly or wrongly.

Strangely a tax on second or third homes and so on might inflate the price of more expensive family homes assuming they remain CGT free when sold as a primary residence.

For someone with a BTL that of course would attracted tax on sale, but if multiple homes attract tax, we may see a shift if BTL funds into bigger family homes, just to take advantage of the tax position.

It's not about the funds raised.

It's about the message it presents, i.e. first home ownership is a right, second home ownership is a privileged and a business with an inherent cost to society.
