Tourism - The Next Victim Of Protectionism?

Recommended Posts

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20101002/twl-us-considers-europe-terror-warning-41f21e0.html

The Obama administration is reportedly considering warning US citizens to stay vigilant while in Europe due to new al-Qaeda threats.

The State Department may issue a travel warning as early as Sunday advising Americans to stay away from European tourist sites, transportation hubs and other facilities because of fresh threat information, the Associated Press reported.

State Department spokesman PJ Crowley declined to comment on the matter. But he said the administration remains focused on al-Qaeda threats to US interests and will take appropriate steps to protect Americans.

A European official briefed on the talks said the language in the US alert is expected to be vague and will not address a specific country or specific landmarks.

European and US officials have not identified any specific targets that terrorists might be considering, the official said. Officials have called the threat credible but not specific.

The US has reportedly told European leaders that the State Department alert would be intended to raise the warning level to match the information about the would-be attack that surfaced last week.

This warning does not help to protect US citizens. The risk area is far too large and the threat apparently imminent. Anyone already here would have to go through 'major transportation centres' to leave and anyone with tickets will come anyway as there's no travel ban and so no insurance. This warning therefore will save no lives if the worst happens and only serve to terrorise 750 million people.

Just read on the BBC that the threat is not imminent. Apparently a group of British Pakistanis and German Afgans are under observation over concerns of Mumbai style shooting plot.

A great achievement in and of itself: we must keep the populace cowered or they'll start asking questions!

Yeah, this latest 'terror alert' stinks of propaganda and manipulation. Well, even more than usual of course.

As far as I can tell, there is no evidence whatsoever for believing any sort of Bombay-style attack is imminent. From the sounds of things, someone likely posted some fantasy thread on a website somewhere. Still, why let a complete lack of evidence stop you from keeping the population scared and help your own tourist industry while you are at it.

So much for all the hope that this scaremongering security theatre rubbish might change under Obama. He really is looking more like a USA version of Tony Blair as time goes on. I'm sure he'll pick up a load of plum, well paid sinecure jobs with the banks and special interests when he is out of power.

What you mean after opening our borders to people from peace loving nations such as Pakistan and Somalia we're a target for terrorist ... who'd have thunk it.

Having seen the success of the Indian athlete village I dont think we have too much to be scared of.

With Iraq and Afghanistan now under US control () it must be deeply troubling to the Americans that China doesn't have a strong radical muslim tradition.

They're going to have to come up with a new 'target'.

We've had the US, UK and Spain. All the media fuss seems to be around the Eiffel Tower but I'm wondering if they'll somehow want to see Germany and perhaps Turkey brought into this one? They've managed to keep out if largely to date.

Britain has followed the US in upgrading its travel advice for Europe following a series of terror alerts.

The Foreign Office warned that there was a "high threat" of attacks in countries including France and Germany, rather than the "general threat" previously identified.

I hope US citizens decide to walk to the airport:

Car Crash Stats: There were nearly 6,420,000 auto accidents in the United States in 2005. The financial cost of these crashes is more than 230 Billion dollars. 2.9 million people were injured and 42,636 people killed. About 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States -- one death every 13 minutes.

Sotaro should warn them.

The Bombay attack where twenty "highly trained" AQ operatives, armed to the teeth with automatic weapons, managed to kill 173 people? I'm so scared. That guy in Cumbria actually had a better average.

Edit: It was 166 normals, 173 includes the attackers.

That certainly puts it in context. The Yanks will suck it up though and holiday at home as Obama wants.
