AvidFan
War over a few islands? Sounds familiar: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/8036058/China-warns-tourists-not-to-visit-Japan.html Still, China seems to be causing most of the problems: http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-world/japan-pm-urges-china-to-be-responsible-20101001-1609z.html What with propping up their currency to force a trade surplus, which Japan needs like a hole in the head, this could turn nasty. That's the two largest nations it's P155ing off. Whatever next? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c98qdFQF7sw
billybong
If it were simply China v Japan it would be a virtual walkover for China as Japan has little military but Japan relies on the US. Well exactly but if it were simply China v Japan it would be a walkover. Before WW2 it would be a different matter of course as Japan was quite big militarily then but now is now. No it wouldn't Japan has a robust military, defending a mountainous and forested island on the other side of a reasonably large sea. How exactly would China go about effecting a landing? How would they get air and water supremacy? Other than nukes they wouldn't. council dweller
The end game approaches? My guess is that Japan will re-arm, interest rates will be increased to 7% to attract money back from abroad, Japanese companies will work flat out to produce equipment, the Yen will go to the moon as there's a rush to convert back into it. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is tipped into depression. Half of Britain's car industry is mothballed for example. Just a wild guess... You can bet you're bottom dollar they've got a secret army of Godzilla robots stashed under a volcano, just waiting for the Chinese to make the wrong move! council dweller
7% interest rates with their debt? Unworkable surely? Tongue in cheek of course, I just find it strange that people can talk so casually about war.... But, war changes everything, the rule book gets torn up, millions die, many lose everything, a few get very rich. I don't like it. My wife is in Japan for a few weeks, hopefully she'll be able to bring back my Shoei helmet and buy an oil filter for the van before all hell breaks loose. And not forgetting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Liberation_Army The PLA is the world's largest military force, with approximately 3 million members (see List of countries by number of total troops), and has the world's largest (active) standing army, with approximately 2.25 million members 3 million available that could probably be increased hugely in size very quickly. Taiwan is in a similar position to Japan. It's Taiwan's allies and their resources that's being relied on rather than its own capability. For me it's not really a matter of respect or otherwise and it's not being disrespectful at all to try to see reality. They've had to sit on their hands to some extent except as a defensive force and as things stand would be reliant on the US - that is if it came to real war rather than cold/cod war style mutual harassment. billybong
Quality not quantity. Indeed but realistically speaking there's nothing to say that the Chinese army doesn't have sufficient quality relative to the Japanese force. China certainly has overwhelming numbers. Indeed, I did hear a few years ago that they'd be able to put nuclear weapons together within weeks. By the way, I did have the pleasure of teaching English at one of their bases. Pretty strange really, everthing had a 1950's feel to it. Even the food...miso, grilled fish and rice. tallburt
Same old same old with the Japs.....lack of natural resources. Any effective embargo (which being an island state wouldn't be too difficult in the grand scheme of things) would see them in trouble fairly quickly. Also, given the Japs tour of East Asia 1931 - 1945 I'm not sure there would be too many sympathetic to their cause in that part of the world at least (ask the Koreans). Of course, the US would be expected to be onside this time around....how things change eh?
