Mixed signals on road to millionaire's way

When even the organisation releasing the information sounds doubtful about whether it means what it appears to mean, then a double dose of caution is required from its audience.

That was the position yesterday, when Halifax, the UK's biggest mortgage lender, said house prices rose 1.6 per cent in August compared with July, the highest monthly increase for almost a year. On an annual basis, prices were 2.5 per cent ahead....
