I have never looked into this before but a friend is looking for a new bike and has about a grand to pay - just wondering if he can get more bang for buck from buying online? Never bought an actual bike online as I'd be concerned about the frame size, but certainly all the bits and pieces and spare parts. I wouldn't want to buy a bike from a store that I couldn't take it back to get adjusted in the first few weeks either, but that's just me. Where you can make savings is by buying the outgoing model as they shops try to shift any stock they've got left before they get next years in. There were some good deals around a month or so ago, there might still be some around if you look. evanscycles.com are a big chain and likely to have a branch nearby. They're a bit middle of the road, but they're miles better than Halfords. Otherwise, just try to find the website of local shops - they will likely have a 'sale' section with anything that's going cheap which you might miss in-store. Prices dont seem hugely different from your local bike shop, and as others say - the ease of popping back in to sort out wee things is worth an extra few quid. Good shout about end of season deals. What they send you will need assembling, and it's a much more skilled job than assembling flat-pack stuff from ikea or argos. Habeas Domus Posted September 24, 2010 Share Posted September 24, 2010 I would never buy a bike online, the danger that it will get broken during transit or that you wont be able to set the thing up properly vastly outweigh the savings you might make. And the same goes for big-box stores like Asda/Halfords. Bike shops are like hifi shops, intimidating for newbies but its well worth the effort finding a good one.
