Pent Up
Miranda Richardson, Sky News OnlineThe Government will reveal "painful" decisions when it publishes the findings of its Spending Review on October 20, Nick Clegg will warn later. In a speech at the Institute for Government, the Deputy Prime Minister will say that the "guiding purpose of the Coalition is to govern for the long term - to take the necessary steps now to ensure a fairer and more prosperous future." Mr Clegg will also say: "The truth is that real reform - of public services, of our political system, of our economic system - takes many years of patient execution of a strategy. "We know that decisions taken for the long-term are, in the short-run, difficult, painful or unpopular - or all three." The Deputy Prime Minister is expected to attack the previous government for the frequency of its reshuffles. "The average tenure of a government minister in the last Labour Government was just 1.3 years," he will say. "This Government recognises that constant reshuffling of the ministerial deck is not conducive to good government, and that we will aspire to greater stability in the way ministers are allowed to govern." He will conclude: "It falls to our political generation - and to this generation as a whole - to take the necessary steps now for a better, fairer future. "Reform and change today is necessary if we want mobility and prosperity tomorrow. "That's the horizon shift we need. That's what the Coalition Government is about." Johnny Storm
Short term house price crash pain for long term economic prosperity. Now man up and put your money where your mouth is. The only thing that might be painful or unpopular is if they try to take more from me. No cut could ever be painful for me.
