Closure threat looms over 150 Nationwide agencies

The future of around 150 Nationwide Building Society agencies is under threat, it was reported today.

The mutual is understood to be considering axing its network of agencies based with firms such as solicitors and estate agents in a move that could impact hundreds of workers.

Nationwide's agency network trades under the Nationwide banner, as well as the Cheshire, Derbyshire and Dunfermline brands, although staff that man the counters are not directly employed by Nationwide.

I waited in a queue at one of these nationwide agencies today. Just 1 poor woman behind the desk dealing with an entourage of 80+ old people arriving on their mobility scooters to get the rotted passbook updated that hadn't been updated since the war. Either that or to voice their confusion about why they only get 0.01% interest these days when they used to be able to buy a bottle of gin a week with their interest in the past.

On the opposite side of the road is a brand new refurbished "Derbyshire BS" branch which is now just a trading name/division of Nationwide Building Society (under one FSA registration now) but Nationwide customers outnumbering the accounts under the Derbyshire brand 20-1 or more cannot use it! It had 3 cashier desks all empty and 5 staff with nothing to do! Whilst the Nationwide customers opposite were getting angry and just giving up waiting in the agency, like I did after 10mins.

A truly bizzare way to run a company.

Are they too chicken to close down the extra branches and agencies where they aren't needed since the mergers and allow customers to use all their branches whatever brand name they put outside?

Not really. It seems that the banks/BS's took on lots of retail management (the ex head of HBOS was a retail high flyer). The first rule of retail is to ensure that (1) never have enough staff to cope and (2) always make customers wait and inconvenience them to the maximum extent.

...suggest during the housing boom times these agencies who operated from solicitors and EAs were close to many deals and were in a 'priveleged' position to pick up the 'business'....now it's all dead on it's feet the more lucrative transactions have disappeared....
