Is Global Banking Consolidating

Recommended Posts

If you look across the world companies are merging not just within nations but holding portfolios across many nations. Its astonishing how broad the global cell phone carriers are for example. And obviously manufacturing has consolidated on a global level. 5 computer manufacturers control probably 60% of the global market.

But there are still a ton fo banks out there. Look at just in Europe how many major banking corporations there are. Yet the consolidation is happening. In the UK in the crisis Lloyds took over HBOS and Alliance & Leicester taken over by Santander. Which Santander UK now includes the operations of Abbey National, Alliance & Leicester and Bradford & Bingley.

In the USA JPM swallowed Bear Steanrs(13k employees) and Washington Mutual(~44,000). Wells Fargo took over Wachovia which had 120,000 employees. Bank of America took over Merrill Lynch which had 60,000, and Countrywide Financial. Now the big four US banks; Citigroup, JPM, Wells and BoA control close to 50% of deposits in the country.

This is one area where the UK looks strong. 4 of the world's top banks are headquarter in the UK. HSBC, RBS, Barclays and Lloyds Group.
