Overweight Running 10Ks/half Marathons

Being a natural chubby type - I mean to get down to a reasonable weight requires eating less than 1500 cals per day and exercising - anymore cals and no weight comes off, or the exercise has to be pretty tough - like half marathon training, or hard training circuit training. Now while I see other people who never exercise and don't seem to eat that much less and always always stay the same weight - whilst its possible they eat very little - I do believe there is definate differences in peoples metabolic rates.

Despite being a few stone overweight I have managed to run reasonable 10K times in the 42/43 Mins range - I wonder does being a chubby type give you an advantage in training because you have to train hard to get your weight down, with a sluggish metabolism - then the potential for improving your time vastly over those skinny types that are running all the time and still only have PBs around 40 or 41 mins. Often see people without a bit of weight on them, and then they tell there PB is 40 Mins or something.

I've been overweight and now my weight is healthy - I have 2-3 kg to lose perhaps.

42-43 minutes for 10km is excellent, overweight or not. I don't think being overweight has any physical advantage. I became quicker with every kg I dropped. You are still quicker than me (although I'm a long distance runner)!

However, I think going through the whole process of weight loss is very taxing mentally and requires very robust willpower. This gives us an advantage in training. The sustained diet and exercise routine I went on (about 14 months to shift ~37kg) has prepared me well for the marathon training I'm doing currently.

Also, I don't think you should equate being thin with being fit. Often these very thin types have pretty pathetic legs and overall muscle mass.

Which is strange in itself as muscle mass gives you increased metabolism.

It's usually trhe extra skinny kenyans who win marathons so i don't see where you're coming from?

being thin = advantage in running

Well, as far as I can - in my current situation all of my meals are in mess hall although the food is mostly excellent and there is pretty extensive choice. Essentially I've cut out bread, dairy, cereals, rice, pasta, potatos and anything sugery (coridal, soda, deserts, sweets).

Combined with a pretty rigorous exercise regime (good couple of hours per day in the gym and running/walking) I've dropped about 4kg in five weeks and feeling really good. Not counting calories, eat until full, just limiting the sorts of foods I eat (except for one 'cheat night' a week).

For longer distances yes.

'Skinny' is perhaps a bit unfair a word though. They are just muscle and bone. I imagine their ratio of muscle to body weight is not hugely different to some musclebound body builder. They are just machines for covering large distances very quickly. No point in having anything more than muscle and bone for that.

Watched the 5km women yesterday on TV. The speed they do is mental.

Mmm low carb - is a low carb diet suitable for distance running? I find a few days without carbs and I am lacking in energy.

Not sure if you could run your best half marathon or 10K with only veggies and meat.
