Are you saying that the popularity of the programme rests on the anonynimity of this character? Wouldn't Clarkson have something to say about that?

I find the whole thing sad and ridiculous that such a non event has made headline news. Moreover I suspect it's all been manipulated to make the bloke money too.

I don;t think it make any money does it? That's not the point of the BBC.

To see Clarkson, May and that utter bell, Hammond, talk like there has been some gross travesty of trust and morals make me irate.

Let the driver has his moment from the program, just like the program gave those 3 the chance to be household names.

I thought top gear was one of the mainstays of the BBC's commercial arm? The show is sold abroad, there's all sorts of merchandise available, FFS, some dullards even buy "I am the Stig" t-shirts. So they (the beeb) obviously think its worth something to them whether the cynical crew of HPC think so or not.

Personally I think they prefer the mystery as there's always the possibility of the stig being a really famous driver.

This is also the sort of publicity that money can't buy.
