Ok, Own Up, Who On Here Is A Gambler?

Nice try. What next - who on here is proud? who on here covets his neighbours wife?

I made money from gambling for a while to tide me over, does that count?

Surely it's only a vice if you're addicted and losing money you can't afford.

Would'nt it be boring if we did'nt have any vices.

Online gambling is a big problem and its normally the feckless stupid that are afflicted. Take the lottery which is just another tax on the poor and stupid

I had an 18 month spell in my early twenties when I was properly addicted tofruit machines. Blew 25k in 18 months playing them, took me the next 5 years to pay it back.

And I also agree about online gambling, I've never blown a fortune but the online roulette machines make it so easy to blow a couple of hundred in just a few minutes. I've actually looked around to try and find some sort of program that once installed would stop me installing any gambling sites, but to no avail.

Just need to rely on the threat of a bollocking from the wife!!

I could live on my advantage play profits, and I was semi pro for a while, but it's hard work and very anti social.

I'd rather have job were I talk to people rather than stare at a couple of screens for hours.

I'm a free money kind of guy, so I still do the easy stuff.

I'd finish work and head to the arcade and stand there for 3 or 4 hours sticking in pound coins. On nights out I'd stand at the fruit machine all night. went a couple of years where the only lays I got was on holiday due to spain having crap puggies!!

I was a right saddo, god knows what I was thinking at the time. Stupid sheltered upbringing with parents concerned with nothing outside Glasgow, no one explained to me the possibilities or gap years working abroad or any of that.

Play poker occasionally. Never online but live games. Also played in Vegas quite a few times.

Never lost any serious money playing poker in Vegas. I normally play the low limit games with a starting stake of 200 USD and I'll play 4 hours a night. Some nights I'll lose, others double my money. Overall I'm about 200USD up after 4 trips but had a lot of fun in the process. It would acutally be a lot cheaper to pay someone else to play for me while I do something more productive.

No limit is where the serious money is to be lost, and quickly too. Blackjack is OK if you learn basic strategy, but you're still giving the house about 0.5% per hand. Playing becomes a bit robotic once you learn basic strategy, so its all about the craic at the table. You can learn to count but its hard work.

With poker you're taking the money off the other players, whereas the other games its the casino. No prizes for guessing that the probability on the other games is rigged in the casinos favour. For poker the casino takes a simple rake per hand. Beating the rake plus the dealer and waitress tips on the very low limit games is hard work, unless you have some suckers at the table.

I "bet" on gold, indexes and currencies so yes definitely. People who do this and call themselves "investors" are fooling themselves.

Me too! I also pay the stupid tax via an office syndicate

Incredible. Did you seek help or do it yourself?

I have a friend who blows money on them, he plays the Sky Bet ones at £25 a spin! Lunatic!

Last time I was in vegas, I was up $900 within an hour of hitting the pokies, so all cocky and confident, I moved into the high rollers $1m jackpot section and ripped through $500 in 5 spins (less than 30 seconds). I felt sick. This post could also go in the "who here is a loser" thread.

Er, that means you were 400 dollars up, no? Sounds alright to me.

I had over 40k GBP riding on a footie match a few years back.

Won over 2.5k, good money for a nights work, though the skills to do it took months to develop. Realised afterwards it was too much. I never sat down and worked out what would have happened if there'd been a floodlight failure or a weather postponement, but chances are it would have cost me plenty. Strangely enough, those kind of events seem to happen more often in matches where the odds swing around wildly, not that professional sport is crooked or anything.

I watched our site agent lose £55k on Beef or Salmon at the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Must have been back in 2003?

No no, it was arbitrage, this is quite common among pro gamblers.

The outcome of the match was irrelevant to me, but I'd forgotten that I could still lose if something "odd" happened. Fortunately, it didn't.

So no Black Swan event and you won't lose your shirt? I assume you were betting on a win or loss...how much would you've lost if it went against you?
