Resolve

Musician Wyclef Jean To Run For Haiti President

Haitian-born musician Wyclef Jean has said he will run for president of the earthquake-hit Caribbean country.

The Fugees star will officially announce his candidacy on Larry King's CNN show on Thursday, media reports say.

Haiti is scheduled to elect a new leader on 28 November.

The country was hit by a devastating earthquake in January which killed more than 250,000 people.

Wyclef, who is ambassador-at-large of Haiti, told Time magazine that the devastation that followed the earthquake had motivated him to make a bid for the leadership.

I just know I'm going to see a rapper as the US President in my lifetime.

Do you think anyone's told Wyclef November's nearly three months away?

Not a man who you can trust what he says and unfit for government, I'd say.

Don't dismiss Wyclef Jean. Frankly he could not be worse than the crooks and gangsters who have run Haiti for generations and there are plenty of precedents where musicians or actors have been surprisingly effective politicians. Wyclef also has some family support in this - his uncle has been the Haitian ambassador to the United States since 2005.

Well here's his manifesto:

Election time is coming

If I was president,

I'd get elected on Friday, assasinated on Saturday,

and buried on Sunday.

If I was president...

If I was president

An old man told me, instead of spending billions on the war,

we can use some of that money, in the ghetto.

I know some so poor, when it rains that when they shower,

screaming "fight the power".

That's when the vulture devoured

[chorus]

If I was president,

I'd get elected on Friday, assasinated on Saturday,

and buried on Sunday.

If I was president...

If I was president...

If I was president...

If I was president

But the radio won't play this.

They call it rebel music.

How can you refuse it, children of moses?

[chorus]

If I was president,

I'd get elected on Friday, assasinated on Saturday,

and buried on Sunday.

If I was president...

If i was president

Tell the children the truth, the truth.

Christopher Columbus didn't discover America.

Tell them the truth.

The truth

YEAH! Tell them about Marcus Garvey.

The the children the truth YEAH! The truth.

Tell them about Martin Luther King.

Tell them the truth.

The Truth.

Tell them about JFK

If I was President

[chorus]

If I was president,

I'd get elected on Friday, assasinated on Saturday,

and buried on Sunday.

If I was president...

If I was president

Would Will Smith really be worse than Ronald Reagan or George Bush? He has at least got charm and style.

We need someone brave enough to take down the banks, no-one from a political background will ever attempt it, they know they'd be assassinated or discredited by a made-up scandal very quickly.

So why not a rapper?

No that's why I posted up Will Smith, as he would be most plausible, seem's like a good bloke. Being fair he's more of an actor now anyway.

I just like the idea of candidates rapping policies and manifestos. If Gordon Brown had said "I've got 99 problems and a bitch ain't one", I think more people would have taken to him.

The revolution will not be televised. Link.

You know, you might be on to something there.

Being involved in a shooting or accused of pimping is a badge of honour for some american rappers, so they're not going to live in fear of mud-slinging or assassination attempts, in fact they might relish it.

Just 'cause she dances go-go

It don't make her a ho, no

Maxine, put your red shoes on

We going to the disco

We gonna elope to Mexico

Called up my mama, said I'm in love with a stripper, yo...

I think if Mr Jean could apply his superior intellect to the nation's problems he could really make a big impact.

Weird...

Well I'm glad at least one person didn't misconstrue my post as serious political commentary on the viability of a Wyclef Jean presidency.
