I bought the complete Jeremy Brett box set for my ma, recently borrowed it and have been working my way through such excellence. Having only watched the first 10 mins of the new one, i cannot truly judge, but find the late victorian setting of the series crucial. I saw the recent film and found it a very shallow action movie. There is little build-up of tension or atmosphere and minor characters just dip in and out. Nice idea, good casting and I'm hoping it gets a lot better. The first Inspector Morse wasn't that great. It's just about the only thing I've watched on TV for the last couple of months, and it was pretty watchable for something with 90-minute episodes. I preferred the 1st episode there was a nice injection of humour in it which I thought worked quite well. Episodes 2 and 3 it was as if they where trying to find out what worked. I'm a big fan of the Arthur Conan Doyle stuff and I think it will be hard to beat the Jeremy Brett / ITV effort in terms of accuracy vs the source material. Brett played the character perfectly and stuck the perfect balance between genius and insanity. Having said that, I really enjoyed "Sherlock". By using a contemporary setting and more modern forms of communication, it was successfully brought up to date. The two lead actors were good choices for their respective roles, and only the slightly thin plots let it down a bit. Fairly high production values too, which is something often missing from present-day TV drama. Hope they make a second series. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I thought the plots were pretty weak, rushed and built very little suspense. Boring in parts. I really like the representation of Watson, but I find Sherlock too forced. He comes across as a petulant, but hyper intelligent, unlikable teenage girl. Gattis (in his acting role) is dreadful. So I'd say neither a travesty nor a hit. It might get better though. Cogs Posted August 9, 2010 Share Posted August 9, 2010 I wanted to hate it but I quite enjoyed it. Nothing is going to touch Jeremy Brett's version so why even try. Some interesting touches, I like the way everyone refers to him as 'freak' although the joke about his powers of observation having antisocial implications turned up in the recent Hollywood film which itself stole it from the last BBC adaptation whatever it was called (terrible, they transcribed almost an entire scene actually). The thing about Sherlock Holmes is that he is bullet proof as a cultural icon. He's had the piss taken out of him, being played really badly, been turned into propaganda and pornography, action hero, buffoon, cartoon animal...it doesn't really matter, he is well beyond the point where any of it is going to stick and was long before anyone here was born. DrGaz Posted August 10, 2010 Share Posted August 10, 2010 It was OK - watchable and enjoyable in parts. A bit too "Dr Who" IMO. Each episode could have been 20 minutes shorter as they got boring at times (as usual with modern drama too much whizzy camerawork and not enough story). Don't like the on-screen mobile phone graphics, and I detest those occassional "high impact" whooshy Matrixy bits. Disappointing "cliffhanger" ending to the last episode. I wish they just wrapped up the episode properly. Moriarty was pretty crap - a bit too Graham Norton IMO. Jeremy Brett and Eric Porter have nothing to worry about!
