Curious Gold Coin

Recommended Posts

I've bought many sovereigns in the past and something like this never happened. It is precisely the right diameter and thickness. To my (reasonably) trained eye it looks the real deal. When dropped/flipped it makes a lovely ringing noise like all my other sovereigns. But it weighs in too heavy - 8.11g.

I've seen coins slightly outside of their correct weight before by say 0.01g but never by 0.12g. I'm perplexed.

That doesn't sound good. Overwieght virtually always means fake. Will you tell us where you bought from? Pics would be nice.

It could be made from platinum, from a time, when platinum was cheaper than gold. There have been fakes made with this heavier metal, and technically your coin is more valuable than a regular gold sovereign. A collectors item!
