California: Oakland Votes to Allow Large-Scale Marijuana Farming - LINK

Oakland has become the first city to authorize large-scale industrial cultivation

of marijuana. The City Council voted Tuesday in favor of a plan to license four factories

where marijuana would be grown and packaged for medical use. The facilities would

not be limited in size, but would be heavily taxed and regulated. Supporters of the measure

say it would create jobs and bring in millions of dollars to the city. Opponents say it will put

small growers out of business.

It has begun.

Small-time dealers with their little plastic baggies had better watch out - the government is moving in on your turf.

If you can tax it, they'll authorize it.

A new day beings.

That and it'll keep the unemployed peaceful if they are stoned all day long. I imagine that's the real reason.

It's a funny ol' world!

I remember the western media condemning Zimbabwe on a daily basis for essentially 'printing money' and also knocking Guinea Bissau for been the world's first 'narco state'.

I think Africa were just ahead of the curve.

That along with the recent 'fiscal state of emergency', it looks like California is breaking bad.

You are joking right? Get stoned in Oakland and then travel a little way to Napa and get stoned again. What's breaking bad about that? Oh and it's warm usually.

It was a subtle reference to the TV series of that name, Cali seems to be doing that on the state level.

It's amazing that the legalised drug dealers in the form of Big Tobacco have basically been sued and legislated out of existence in the West, so revenue hungry state governments are tolerating and fostering new addictions they can tax. Remember, smoking a marlboro in public = bad, but easing your pain with 'officially' produced and taxed medicinal herbs = groovy, man.

Also in the news, 30 July 2010 :

BBC News - Police seize $1.7bn worth of marijuana in California - LINK

Police in California say they have seized $1.7bn worth of marijuana plants in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

They have also arrested 97 people over the past three weeks, most of them Mexican nationals believed to have

ties with Mexican drug cartels.

White House drug czar Gil Kerlikowske said police had found industrial-sized plantations of marijuana.

Experts say Mexican cartels are increasingly growing marijuana in the US, rather than smuggling it there.

450 officers from local, state and federal agencies took part in the raids in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada

in California.

They found more than a hundred locations where marijuana was being grown illegally.

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said the marijuana plantations were a danger to local residents, as

the organised crime gangs behind them "don't just grow marijuana on our public lands".

"They continue their criminal conduct during their off-season with other illegal drug and violent activities in

our local communities," she said.

Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy Gil Kerlikowske said "tremendous devastation"

had been done by the industrial-sized fields.

He said eradication teams removed thousands of pounds of toxic fertilizers and rubbish from the sites.

Clearing the decks, moving big business monopoly in.

How many people will have a license to smoke it on medicinal grounds? A limited market? Will they export?
