How Many Potentially Habitable Planets Are There In The Milky Way?

The Kepler guys doing a presentation at Ted say they have already found hundreds of earth sized planets, if you assume the patch of sky Kepler is looking at is reasonably typical for the Milky Way, then there are about 100 million earth sized planets in our galaxy alone.

I knew that would come up at some point, I should have posted on the main board it might be bad news for prices.

On second thoughts, given the price of a one bed flat in London these days it might be cheaper to fund your own space agency and grab a planet instead...

But it's all location, location, location. London will be hosting the 2012 Olymipic Games which will give a filip to prices, and sellers who bought at the peak of the market cannot afford to take a loss so they will not sell. Crossrail will boost prices accross the capital, as will the decision NOT to expand Heathrow Airport. 150 million turks wanting to come and live here will put upward pressure on prices and a Michael Caine film about Elephant and Castle will transform the area from a dangerous shitehole into a trendy enclave.

Venus is pretty much Earth-sized, but even Krustie and Phil would have problems recommending the place as a great investment opportunity..

He needs to revisit the Drake equation. You can't give such a specific answer. Being within a couple of orders of magnitude would be seen as accurate.

Fair point, but the Drake equation has just taken another serious battering.

Drake started with a random 'if one in a million stars has a planet'

We have known for a few years now that a lot more than 1 in a million stars has a planet, they are all over the place.

Next bit would be the if one in a million planets is like earth.

Thanks to Kepler, that number has just got upped significantly, there are loads of planets of a similar size/mass/orbit in the universe, statistically from the results so far from Kepler 100 million rocky planets is a fair guess.

Of the four rocky planets we have been able to study closely, only one has conditions for life currently, one is pretty close and has had running water in the recent past (Mars) and one may have been suitable a very long time ago(Venus).

So that Drake equation just keeps on spitting out bigger and bigger numbers the more we can put educated guess in place of wild speculation.

Well, why haven't we gone anywhere to say hello?

Because we can't, with what we know, and maybe we won't in time for our planet to die, so maybe no civilizations live long enough to figure it out.

There was also that professor who said that perhaps alien civilizations view us like a colony of ants, why would you bother trying to communicate with something as primitive as a colony of ants?

That's the problem. Liquid-fueled rockets haven't really changed in principle since the 1940s (Von Braun et al). Unless some clever geezer comes up with a way to punch through the fabric of space-time, we ain't goin' nowhere quickly.

I think we had better look after what we have until we find a way to get off this rock and spread out through the stars.

The way I see it is this: If you had enough monkeys and typewriters one would eventually type the complete works of Shakespear.But what if our planet is that one off event? You could have a number with an awful lot of noughts before it happened again.

Because we prefer to spend our resources on weapons and bidding up house prices.. if we could devote as little as 1% of global GDP into space projects (Moon base, asteroid mining/manufacturing, deep space probes, Ultra long baseline interferometery, space elevators and the like) then we'd already be on our way.

Because the laws of physics as we know them mitigate against interstellar travel. The fact that the skies aren't full of tourists from other planets suggests that no one else has found an easy fix for interstellar travel either. The only vaguely possible technology would be building sodding massive spaceships the size of London and sending them off on a one way journey to some planet that appeared habitable - the grandchildren of the original occupants would then colonise the planet. Admittedly, that is only an engineering challenge, but it is quite a big one.
