Woot
Either that or threaten them with the ombudsman +1 It is not their money and it is highly unethical of them to put obstacles in you path like this. Don't let them off the hook - they need to learn it is unacceptable practice.
The Masked Tulip
Loads of posters over on the MSE forum who have gone through the same cr*p trying to close the accounts.
Minos
Beware, Santander have changed the small print on ex-A&L accounts. If you do not use your account often enough they can class it as "Dormant", and charge an annual fee. It's all on page 8 of leaflet SA0248/NOV/JW... you did read it, didn't you? It might be safer to keep a £1 STR fund under the matress. How can you be sure the £1 isn't a fake?
deflation
I had to leave £1 in an online AA account. To get it all, I would have had to call an 0845 number, not worth it. I tried "saynoto....." but no alternative no. is listed. I left £0.01 in an ING a/c on purpose, because they slashed the rates for established savers and offered good rates to only new a/c holders. Citibank, to be fair, will let me reduce the balance to zero and then refund it again later, all online, but their rates just fell. noodle doodle
could part of the problem be that the poor call centre bod gets a black mark if they close an account so they'll wriggle endlessly to avoid doing it there and then? "You're losing us business Smith! That's your bonus docked and your toilet break down to 30 seconds!"
Limpet
A business that wants to stay in business, gladly takes your money, and holds onto it like a limpet.
