ABOARD USS GEORGE WASHINGTON — A nuclear-powered U.S. supercarrier led an armada of warships in exercises off the Korean peninsula on Sunday that North Korea has vowed to physically block and says could escalate into nuclear war.

U.S. military officials said the maneuvers, conducted with South Korean ships and Japanese observers, were intended to send a strong signal to the North that aggression in the region will not be tolerated.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been particularly high since the sinking in March of a South Korean naval vessel. Forty-six Korean sailors were killed in the sinking, which Seoul has called Pyongyang's worst military attack on it since the 1950-53 Korean War

Report on Beeb pages earlier (can't find now) saying Pyongyang had threatened to go nuclear if they run these exercises.

The reason this is going on by the way is because the US is pulling out of S. Korea and the South Koreans are basically going to be on their own. Or so an arms dealer friend currently there has told me. The Koreans are having to re-equip and train their own military to standard and I suspect these exercises are part of that.

There's been a huge US Naval base in Pusan for donkeys. The exercise is in international waters too.

So how come the US has told Taiwan and South Korea to prepare to take care of themselves as they don't want the burden?

Cus Uncle sam doesn't have the $ any more.... S Korea and Taiwan will be fine, both countries have nuclear power lots of it, and they will most definately have secret nuclear programmes and convient space programmes too where they can assemble enough H bombs to perform a decapitation strike against any enemy who threatens them.

The US denied for 50 years they kept H bombs on British soil, technically they were correct as they were just parts, but could be assembled to make bombs. The nuclear club is much bigger than people realise. And thus is Seoul gets hit by an A bomb, Pygongyang eats a ton of H bombs. Same thing with Taiwan if Taiwan is invaded Beijing and Shanghai will be nuked.

Possibly. But I got this from the inside. 1st hand by an American arms dealer (military) friend I've known for several years. He also says Victor Bout has been released. :(

China won't go after Taiwan. It'll put on a show and posture about but I reckon the Chinese and Taiwanese leaders probably play golf together every other Sunday.

North Korea is far more likely to do something very stupid and hit South Korea.

A proper doom thread!

The following is taken from Pawns in the game, written in 1958, a very interesting read from start to finish.

World War Three if started by the Eastern Communist dictators will begin without any

preliminary warning. An international general strike will be called in all capitalistic countries.

This action is calculated to produce the paralysis previously referred to. The Communist planes

will bomb all industrial centres to knock out the war potential of the United States and Canada

and kill as many of the population as possible in order to bring about speedy surrender and

subjugation. Britain will likely get the same treatment. Nerve Gas may be used on industrial

areas the enemy do not wish to destroy. Soviet forces will occupy the mining districts of

northern Canada from coast to coast. The occupied areas will be used as bases of operation

against the southern objectives. The international general strike will tie up shipping in every

port in the world making it impossible for supplies to reach the people of Great Britain. A

blockade of the British Isles by Soviet submarines will stop any leaks. The people of Britain

will be starved into submission four weeks after the outbreak of hostilities. The members of the

Communist underground in all cities in the western world will evacuate target areas

immediately before the attacks. The underground armies will return and take over the

devastated areas as soon as the “All-Clear” has been given. The Communist 5th Column will

round up and liquidate all people whose names are on the black list. Thus will the directors of

the Western internationalists be got rid of in much quicker time than they got rid of their Nazi

opponents by means of the Nuremberg Trials.

Good question. I actually think China would stomp all over Kim Jong Il if he stepped out of line. China doesn't want WWIII. No chance.

Quite.

The essence of nuclear deterrence is the nexus of mutually assured destruction. Multilateralists claim that nuclear weapons stopped the Americans and the Soviets from fighting an all out war, hence the 'Cold War' of low level conflicts fought through, with, and by proxy combatants (think of the Vietnam War as an example).

More than likely that North Korea's rhetoric is only bluster. No need to worry. China will do everything in its considerable power to stop a regional incident spilling out into a wider conflagration.

For one opinion read pawns in the game.

If World War Three is permitted to take place, the devastation will be so extensive that

internationalists will continue to justify their contentions that ONLY a world government, backed

up by an international police force, can solve the various national and international problems

without resorting to further wars. This argument will appear very logical to many people who

overlook the fact that both the Eastern Communist leaders, and the Western capitalist leaders,

intend to ultimately bring into effect, THEIR ideas for an atheistic-totalitarian dictatorship.
