Britain No Longer Has The Cash To Defend Itself From Every Threat, Says Liam Fox

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Dr Fox said the dire state of the public finances meant the Armed Forces could no longer be equipped to cover every conceivable danger.

Since the Second World War, the nation has maintained a force that can conduct all-out warfare, counter-insurgencies such as in Afghanistan or medium scale campaigns like the Falklands or Sierra Leone.

But Dr Fox has given the strongest signal yet that it will have to give up one or more of these capabilities, which have been maintained at the same time as contributing to collective security pacts such as Nato. “We don’t have the money as a country to protect ourselves against every potential future threat,” he said. “We just don’t have it.”

The military had to be configured only for “realistic potential future threats”, he said, hinting at a substantial cut to conventional forces such as tanks and fighter aircraft.

“We have to look at where we think the real risks will come from, where the real threats will come from and we need to deal with that accordingly. The Russians are not going to come over the European plain any day soon,” he added.

Dr Fox’s frank admission also casts doubt on the future of the 25,000 troops currently stationed in Germany. The Defence Secretary has previously said that he hoped to withdraw them at some point, leaving Britain without a presence in the country for the first time since 1945.

“I would say, what do Challenger tanks in Germany and the costs of maintaining them and the personnel required to train for them, what does that contribute to what’s happening in Afghanistan?” he asked.

The Ministry of Defence is facing a substantial squeeze on resources, with indications that 30,000 servicemen may be sacrificed to meet the Government’s stringent review of departmental budgets.

So 30,000 servicemen to join the dole queue?

It's the defenceless recovery.

The world is a harsh and violent place and this useless clown is announcing to world that the UK is getting weaker.

We used to have something to protect, now we don't. Surely it's about having appropriate strength?

Poor people spending what little they have on alarms and guards makes no sense....or does it?

There's a lot of 'churn' so just a huge drop in recruitment would reduce numbers quickly. Not so long ago, it was shouted how the Army was short of thousands of people.

How much cash does it take for a few more immigration officers to say: "No. Go away."

That would remove 90% of the threat to this country. We have no territorial threats apart from the Falklands.

Nah, every single Minister will be doing this. It's to try to contain the cull.

The immgration flags for waved by Bob on QT last night. he seems to weclome people in whilst admiting there aren't enough jobs, houses and schools. No one is brave enough to say "well we've got no money for extra houses and schools so either immigrants entirely self-fund or don't come in"

I was thinking more of spending billions on fighting an 'enemy' in Afghanistan, while not only ushering it's agents through the front door but paying them to stay. If they want to live in a 14th Century hellhole, let them.

The idea that terrorism is sourced from abroad is now preposterous. Everything they need is right here, usually paid for by the taxpayer.

Is that what was stated? I understood it to mean redeploying those troops rather than decommissioning them - withdrawing from Germany and maintenance of those bases is not the same as cutting those forces altogether. I wonder what X-Quork's take on this is?

Agree with Sarah Bell & Tahoma re immigration - Crowe is a clown whose thinking is entirely contradictory and totally impractical.

If we're going to have trained killers, could we at least invade a country that has nice stuff we can steal?

Seriously, Afghanistan, what is that all about?

Honestly if our mercenaries aren't turning a profit, scrap 'em.

I read the above to mean they would be made redundant, perhaps what they actually meant is they would be literally sacrificed on suicide missions?

This has always been the case.

The numerous and pervious excuses that supersedes each other as validation for our middle eastern invasion and continued prescience, are perverse to say the least.

WMDs/Saddam/Bin Laden/Al-Qaeda/Suppression etc, all bogus political hop goblins and imaginary.

There are more terrorists in Pakistan and Somalia, why are we not invading them?

Why do Iraqis/Afgans deserve liberation above all others (even though half of them never asked for it)?

Yet all despots need a perpetual war against an invisible and intangible enemy, to waste billions of tax and countless lives on. The fight against tyranny should begin at home.
