The problem is that there are all kinds of natural leaks in the area already, plus in theory bacteria decomposing something down in the mud could also produce methane. It does look rather as though we've still managed to not crack open the planet's crust and kill everything though. Here's a relevant documentary (I think we've had this before, but never mind). WTF??? If I was them, Id be building a 50 ft diameter mould 30 ft high, then Id be pouring concrete around the damn thing, entombing it forever.
