Loudon Wainwright III: 10 Songs for the New Depression (Proper)

Robin Denselow, guardian.co.uk

Thursday 15 July 2010 23.16 BST

The best track, House, is a finely constructed song about economics and relationships that tells the story of a couple who plan to get divorced but stay together because they can't sell their house, "so maybe it's a good thing". Elsewhere, he cheerfully matches bleak lyrics against upbeat melodies, as on the opening Times Is Hard, where the man once compared to Dylan announces "you folks need some cheering up ... it ain't me, babe". This is Wainwright at his best.

Here it is:

CD Description

"Some folks are saying things are looking up recession wise and this particular hard time might be ending. Other experts are saying we're in for a 'double-dip' and there's more faeces heading towards the global fans. If that's the case I'd like to cash in. So buddy if you can spare a few bucks, please enjoy 10 Songs for the New Depression!" --Loudon Wainwright III

Times is hard (also on the CD):

1 minute 15 seconds in:

"Who's at fault, who's to blame - string up Bernie what's-his-name.... ask Goldman Sachs to come along... all I can do is play this song"

...followed by the crowd cheering.

So, Mr Cook, who's first interest in in science (in particular the evolutionary basis of behaviour), your starter for ten is this:

Why did bankers throw themselves out of windows during the first depression and in this one they didn't, what changed their behaviour?

Actually, they didn't (throw themselves out of windows in unusual number that is). JK Galbraith's The Great Crash 1929 has some stuff about this in it. There were a few cases which made the papers but they were within the normal rates of suicide before and after the crash.
