bearORbullENIGMA
£10,000 (Guide Price) for a house, up for auction in Rodney Street in Hartlepool. http://www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/news/10000-for-a-house.6412658.jp "They may have to be willing to sit on it for a while, but in the end I think they must make a profit. It's the cheapest I remember in the last 18 years in Hartlepool." Nah, mate, just go on houseprices.co.uk. You'll see that one went in Rodney Street for £10k on 8/06/2004 & one went for £9k on 16/07/2002. It's far more reliable than your selective memory. bearORbullENIGMA
not once does the article even touch on the possibility that someone might live in it Yes, & this is a crucial point in highlighting that estate agents & such understand that much of property is a pyramid scheme. If somebody wants to use the product at the end of the day then fine, BUT, if nobody actually wants to use the product & it is just getting passed on from investor to investor, it has become a pyramid scam. It should also be noted, that once it is understood by all that the product can only be passed on & will never be consumed/used, then the game of pass the parcel comes to an end. A quick search on houseprices.co.uk shows that the last sale in Rodney street was on 19/04/2010.

Rightly or wrongly (wrongly is my opinion), auctioned properties aren't included on houseprices.co.uk or any of the other websites as they are apparently not a true indicator of market value. Go figure.

Go figure. Yes they are included in land registery data and so will show up on houseprices.co.uk. Although they do not include these sales when calculating their house price index because of the reason you mention.

headrow
The house is single skinned and should be knocked down just like they have done with the single brick houses in my town. They are damp , cold and quite frankly unfit for living in.

Executive Sadman
Still, you receive all the same state benefits in Hartlepool that you do in Harrow. Its madness they dont move all the (unemployed) housing benefit recipients to these places. Their benefit monies will, afterall, go a lot further up north than in London. In relative terms, they will be richer. Its in their own interests as well as the taxpayers.

Go figure. Unless they are a repo, when they will not turn up on houseprices.co.uk (or be used to calculate the statistics). But they are availabe from the LR if you purcase the details for the specific property (which if you are looking for trend info is often useless as unless you actually tried to buy at the time, finding the exact address of a repo retrospectively is next to impossible). tim

enrieb
You've not been to Hartlepool then? A thread about Hartlepool is never complete until we mention the monkey hanger story. "Monkey hanger" is an affectionate term by which Hartlepudlians are often known. According to local folklore, the term originates from an incident in which a monkey was hanged in Hartlepool. During the Napoleonic wars, a French ship of the type chasse marée was wrecked off the coast of Hartlepool. The only survivor was a monkey, wearing a French uniform (presumably to provide amusement for those onboard the ship). On finding the monkey, some locals decided to hold an impromptu trial on the beach; since the monkey was unable to answer their questions, and many locals were unaware of what a Frenchman may look like, they concluded that the monkey was in fact a French spy. Just to make sure, the animal was thus sentenced to death and hanged from the mast of a fishing boat on the Headland.
