• Allow NHS foundation hospital trusts freedom to leave the state sector, and give them university-style powers to to borrow money and hire and fire staff. (Guardian).

This is one of Lansley's proposals to help cut NHS costs.

Plenty of university watchers and employees visit this site. I believe there has been considerable criticism of how top managers in universities have rewarded themselves and overseen a mushrooming of administration at the expense of front line staff. It seems a weird model to follow in the interests of cutting costs.

The truth of course, is that this is the real Tory plan for the health service. The GP commissioning stuff is window dressing. the real objective is to hive of the Hospital Trusts into a neo-private sector role so that the private sector can take a bigger slice. The Hospital Trusts are unsupervised now, so will in future be outside any public influence. Who will benefit from that?

I seem to recall its was Tony 'darling of New Labour' Blair that targeted 15% of NHS operations and diagnostics tests to be undertaken in he private sector by 2008.

Maybe looking to the private sector just makes sense?

Maybe Labour and the Coalition aren't so different?
