Virus Scan Hell!

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

Does anyone else here use McAfee software?

I'm absolutely pulling my hair out with it!

Everytime i visit a page with a shopping cart, a form to fill out or even the option to log in - my entire screen freezes and goes into meltdown.

It doesn't happen everytime but when it does it's very annoying!

This is the last page it happened on - http://******/9EHx3f or I thought it was about to do it when I logged in here to rant about it because the whole system slowed down to a snail's pace.

I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it but I actually think this made the problem worse :(

Anyone else had a similar issue or got any advice, apart from smashing the disk with a sledgehammer?

Cheers

Get rid of it. Useless, bloated and costly.

Download Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, it works and you don't notice it. :)

I got rid years ago after finding the same frustrations. I run AVG free version, together with Ad-Aware free, using Windows Firewall. It is a good combination.

Ditch it. It is useless, over-inflated and pants. Uninstall and don't try to reinstall.

As a good free alternative try www.avast.com. Free for home users, recoup their dev costs from business users. We've ditched McAfee and Sophos in favour of this at home and at work.

+1 for Avast

I used to use AVG on my Win installs, but it's getting a little bit intrusive itself now.

+10n for nuking McAfee. Nasty malware - that you pay for. It's not always that easy to be rid of though - although Norton is almost as hard to eradicate as Japanese knotweed.

Alternatively

(takes a deep breath, crouches as if to take a jump)

You could switch to OSX or one of the Linux distributions.

(starts running away very quickly from the flames).

I use Avast - it's free and seems to work well.

+1

I also use the free versions of Advanced System Care and Security 360 from IObit.com.

So far, so good.

I`ve uninstalled Norton/MacAfee from lots of client`s PCs/Laptops and installed the free version of Avast. Again, no real problems since (touch wood).

Cleaned my machine of the 'security system' virus. Very good and regularly updated. I use Spy Bot Search and Destroy as well. McAfee is more trouble than it's worth.

I`ve also used MalwareBytes on a few occasions, seems to be quite effective at getting rid of cwap.

We use McAwful at work. Co-incidentally it went wrong last week and completely crashed my computer. Still I got a shiny new upgrade because the techies couldn't get it restarted.

Avira is the best freeware antivirus. Malwarebytes as above and I use Superantispyware and have just changed to Online Armor for my firewall - don't use windows firewall it is only one way which is a bit useless really!

There are others, threatfire is good. Can't think on atm but I am happy with what i have got./..

Oh of course Noscript! for firefox is IMO essential and possibly negates a lot of specialist stuff...

We use the Enterprise version as well, not really had too many issues. Although the McAfee cockup a few weeks ago which disabled windows because of a faulty virus definition release was amusing.

Prefer Sophos myself.

Although any of the free ones mentioned will do the job. Certainly if I couldn't get my hands on the free work version I'd use the free ones.

If you fit "stage 2" cams, remember to retard the ignition by 2 degrees!

Run a combo on different machines. I have one dedicated to ZoneAlarm Extreme Security. Together with Spybot SD resident, the two progs seem to make extremely good use of available cycles and memory. Haven't tried using the machine for anything else, but why would I want to? <oh yes, I really am that pissed off>

download hijackthis from download.com

if you stop these programs loading at startup they are far less a nuisance and you can still scan downloaded files via right clicking them

Agreed - I've tried a bunch of different anti-virus programs and it's the least intrusive by a long way. It's kind of ironic that it was Microsoft's crappy software that created the need for it in the first place though.

AVG antivirus works happily with ZoneAlarm firewall (both free to domestic users) though I do get quite a few false positive hits with AVG.

When updating ZoneAlarm from an official mirror I was encouraged to download 'Uniblue Registry Booster' which is very intrusive and looks a bit like those fake antivirus products ( I only downloaded it because it was on a site I trusted). Anyone know anything about this one? Not much on Google. It comes up with a lot of Registry warnings.

These sorts of problems have long until recently been fixed avoided by obscurity.
