Why Do Women Think You Can Hear Them From 4 Rooms Away?!

Recommended Posts

Why do women think you can hear them from the other side of the house through closed doors and they aren't shouting? I may be wrong on this but in my experience this is a female thing.

Oh, and the other thing is when you stand up and go down stairs to find out what it was they invariably say either they were thinking aloud or it wasn't important.

Simply because they can hear you from 3 rooms away through closed doors.

Yes I've noticed this.

How is this possible though? As far as I know there are no differences between women and men in hearing tests, it must be a psychological difference, men must tune out unwanted interruptions or something.

Selective deafness is a disability most men possess. It won't show up in hearing tests because they are listening in the hearing tests!

On the other hand, women are made to listen all the time, I guess because they are responsible when babies cry.

The one that gets me is remembering everything you've said or done over years - no matter how insignificant or innocuous, ready to bring it up and use against she whenever she sees fit.

'But that was five years ago...'

How do you know she isn't just making it up - after all, you don't remember saying it, do you?

True, but this is a separate issue, worthy of a separate "Why do women..." thread, we haven't had a miscogynists workout recently. :D

And it's hell when your husband's mother babbles on constantly about nothing and talks directly at you.

I'm not used to socialising much anyway. To go from working with very little chat for weeks on end to 48 hours of constant babble, I can't cope.

I find a female's most amazing skill - is to convince themselves of things that are not true - because they want it that way.

You could call it 'History re-adjustment'.

It is quite amazing and many are very good at it. I have sat there in awe as a bird talks about a subject (Often sex, cheating, number of partners etc..), when I know she is lying. And she knows that I know she is lying too. But she has convinced herself so well that the 're-adjusted' history is correct - she doesn't even realise it !!

It is incredible. I wonder why more spies are not female ? I think they have better natural abilities for the deception. Maybe they let their emotional side slip through too often to be reliable ?

I just tune out immediately when my mother does that...and she does, constantly. I learned the trick from my ex husband! I have to admit that I do miss the odd important piece of babble, though.

Why do they ask a second question before you've had a chance to answer the first? Usually the second question has a flawed premise based on their assumption of your response to the unanswered first question. Then I sort of wander off which probably doesn't help matters.

Obviously, you take too long to answer the first question, or your face and body language give the answer without you needing to speak.

Ah ha!! I know the answer to this after studying my husband for the last 8 years.

It is to do with the incapacity of not being able to do more than one thing at a time. Even if it's being on the computer or reading a paper, most men will not hear the woman even if she's in the next room, let alone 4 rooms away.

I'm not trying to be insulting. The incapacity to multi-task does allow them to properly focus on something. I find it's a skill that needs a bit of directing at times though for it to be productive.

I'm sure most women will agree with this. I doubt you fellas will though.

Is this multi tasking thing true or a myth ?

I know many bloke that can multi task - and many that cannot.

Exactly the same goes for women. I have not studied in detail so I m not sure if one sex is actually better than the other ? I assume experiments must have been done on this before ?

You can only multi-task if none of the tasks takes much concentration. If you are doing some work that takes a lot of thought whilst trying to watch the telly then your brain is not doing both, it is flipping rapidly back and forth between the two which is very bad for it.

If you are doing primarily manual tasks then your brain does not require that sort of focus so can just idle.

The complaint that men cannot multi-task is usually made by housewifes who are looking after the kids whilst making the tea, doing the washing, and watching telly. None of which takes the sort of deep concentration that, for example, playing an interactive computer game does (not that I do that myself).

So IMO it is a myth resultant from different gender roles. Men can multi-task perfectly well but the things they often choose to do are incompatible with multi-tasking.

Thanks - that makes sense. Anyone else ?

OR they are ignoring you. We have inbuilt low pass filters - it's why we're not so upset by a baby's crying as women.

We filter out irrelevant noise.

I doubt any women will agree.

Classic! Thank you for illustrating the point for me.
