The Masked Tulip Posted June 28, 2010 Share Posted June 28, 2010 Can we get an idea of how HPCers are seeing the jobs market locally, in your line of work, etc? Do you have friends, family, work colleagues looking for work and how are they finding it? What affect is this having on mortgage worries, house buying fears, etc, of yourself, friends, family, work colleagues, etc? A few months ago there seemed to be large parts of the UK still in denial about the jobs market but I wonder if things are now turning to the bad. If you can give an idea of your location that would be useful. Awful as it sounds, but it may aid us in working out where house prices are going? I will start... Still pretty much denial in my part of the World. Public Sector still advertising jobs from bottom to top re wages in the local Council, schools, hospitals and public sector buildings. They are supposed to be cutting but are not and I don't know enough about them to know why it is not happening. Private sector workers, tradespeople, etc, are very worried though and keen for work. However still looking and know others who are and it is crap. Two jobs i have seen today one is a topic on this forum :- cost cutter for the nhs 6 month contract £1000 per day the other night shift food factory £6.03 per hour. The few people I know who have proper jobs (not just temp ones to bide them by) are losing their jobs. My sister is being made redundant end of next month. Her BF Andy is being made redundant in 2 weeks time. BMW man's wife Julie got pushed from a news paper. Kai my never ever out of work, always worked for one firm kind of guy for the last 12 years was made redundant last week. Alex my long term strugging acquaintance is still struggling. I'm considering hiring him for the chippy though but I'm wondering if I should as we have some history together (we went to school). Loads of journos I know have been fired from local papers. I hear that loads of local rags are now basically turned out by junior staff and students on work experience. Historically low unemployment area (around 2.5 - 3%), but its very tough out there, even for crappy temp jobs...A few months ago, I heard about a vacancy in my local job centre for a van driving job. It was only only advertised for around 12-24 hours, and apparently they had around 150 applicants for it. Crazy.. Mr Yogi Posted June 29, 2010 Share Posted June 29, 2010 Nearly everyone I know is a self-employed tradesman or runs a small business, so I can't comment on the general jobs market. What I do see though, is a general lowering of the day rate most tradesmen are prepared to accept. 3 years ago £150 - £180 a day was the norm; now most guys will work for £120 - £140 or even less if it's cash in hand. Everyone I know is still busy but surviving on lots of scrappy little jobs of a day or so duration rather than big chunks of work. General mood is that it's going to get worse... Small businesses are just not recruiting. In fact downsizing is the order of the day. I even got a circular the other day from a local commercial estate agent detailing a whole load of small industrial units to let on very flexible terms "ideal for downsizing your business". My cabinetmaking business meanwhile, is busier than ever. I refuse to expand my cost base though, instead taking advantage of the lower day rates charged by my fitters to bring them into the workshop to help out when needed. I know quite a few artists and designers who've been out of work for months. They're mostly looking for full-time work. Personally, I'm ***ked off with the studio system and have been doing contract work for some monhs. There is definitely less work out there compared to five years ago. Costs increasing ; piracy rampant in parts of the industry; it really is hard to see much of a future for these 'graduates' being spooged out of the education sector. Family member made redundant about 4 months ago, now got a financial director job in a manufacturing firm. Most jobs available were in the manufacturing sector. I've started to get the odd recruiter call again and my place is hiring. Last year, three people left voluntarily and replaced by just one. He'd been on a 4 day week before. 20 people paid off. Prospect for another job quickly....poor. However, he has his BTL portfolio to fall back on. Shame there's no equity in any of them !!! Managed to switch into the same job with a different company here (also beat 500 people to another job but never took it). I'm in engineering. In general the jobs market is VERY POOR. Lucky for me I got a new contract for 2 years - I suspect after the CSR science funding will be slashed so any people coming to ends of contracts will be quietly let go (including me when my contract ends in 2 years if I don't work bloody hard to outperform my peers). I know people coming up to ends of contracts now saying getting any job is really tough (not just in uk but all over europe), due to hoards of unemployed physicists applying for everything (there were large cuts in science funding already under labour for my line of work) - usually this is investment bank type stuff, or software companies both of whom go after people who can program and have high level maths/physics knowledge for specialised tasks. I know a lot of people in NHS, teaching etc and they all seem to be ok (some even boasting about how the tories have ringfenced their areas from cuts!). Out of interest, were those recruitment agencies you were speaking to, or the employers themselves? If the employers, were they the Human resources department, or the real managers/department heads? Anyone in the recruitment business is beyond the pale as far as I am concerned. God as my witness: I swear, if I ever have occasion to be part of a hiring decision ever again, and a cv with HR or recruitment experience comes before me, I will invite that person for an interview so I can pour scorn on them.
