_w_
http://www.telegraph...-warns-BMA.html Is that outrage on your part? Concern? You're helping your husband friend's abuse the benefits system? Now you know the consequence of your passivity and that of many others in this country.
Executive Sadman
NHS budget 1997: £37bn NHS budget 2010: £120bn http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article16204.html Dont think that kind of growth is sustainable myself. Almost as crazy as houseprices.
Little Professor
My local trust is making 500 staff redundant. Makes the Coalition's promises to protect NHS staff seem very hollow. Predictably the losses are being made in front-line staffing, rather than at management level.

Almost as crazy as houseprices. It probably means that we have £83bn more doctors' and nurses' salaries to pay. Probably.

The Coalition have said that they'll protect the NHS budget, not the staffing levels. I imagine the NHS is up for heavy reorganisation to make the existing spend more efficient. They have said very loudly they will cut costs to fund the new very expensive cancer drugs that Labour said were too expensive.
council dweller
Looks like it's going to be a recruitment freeze as far as the front end goes. But if the wife does lose her NHS job then we'll go on benefits....happy days!
interestrateripoff
We have an ageing population which means increased medical costs. So far all of the NHS budget has been eaten mostly in wages, the problem is drug cost is going to become more significant. However once more the turkeys vote to sack the frontline staff rather than themselves.

Predictably the losses are being made in front-line staffing, rather than at management level. These are the changes that you are aware of They're hardly going to make a press release out of "we dismissed seven ISO9001 compliance officers". Taxpayers learning this would be outraged that they were employed in the first place On the other hand, they will shout loud and clear "we dismissed seven nurses". Errol
It is going to be ring-fenced, it's just that lots of people with pointless paper-pushing jobs will be outside the fence. Shame.
VeryMeanReversion
Hearsay but I have one friend that was told by the NHS chief that he was planning for a £20bn budget cut.

bricor mortis
Im not a pen pusher im a Registered Nurse in Learning Disability specialising in behavioural change, being made redundant July 8th from the private sector. There is no chance of the NHS giving me a contract even a short one. The front line cuts actually started in the winter under Browns regime, I have posted before about some Plymouth operating theatres being shut down around November for cost savings. I know a lot of posters here think its all going to be management getting the boot, but come the day you or your relatives require a public service you may face some sort of reality check. jareth
Hearsay but I have one friend that was told by the NHS chief that he was planning for a £20bn budget cut. Many 'cuts' are merely slower than previously projected/promised growth. Departments will have drawn up plans to show that it can be done and what the likely consequences would be in order for the Government to pick and choose what reductions in growth are politically acceptable and which departments have the most credible plans for achieving their 'cuts'. They will have started this some time ago. Labour had budgeted for reduced growth in spending too, though not as reduced as the coalition are going for nor did they set out how they would achieve it.
